List # 6 - Vintage Rock & Other SOLD *** Love - Revisited - USA import on Elektra label - a fantastic compilation of some of their best music - 60's psych/ pop/rock at its best - Arthur Lee wrote some truly excellent songs which are all on here. EX - / NM Don't miss this - $18.00 - JOEY1125 Todd Rundgren / Utopia A few words about this eclectic musician and band of minstrels: Despite being very popular in USA but not as big as Springsteen / Bryan Adams / Jon Bon Jovi, his style makes no attempt to emulate any of these guys as his musical genius allows him to follow a different musical path. All of his / their albums are unique and contain some absolute gems along with a few clunkers here and there. Each release from this very creative ensemble unearths something fresh and challenging and with songs that leave you thinking, WTF? How can anyone create something so good. Whilst I always looked forward to buying any new release that came around, I knew instinctively that I may not necessarily like 100% of the contents. With this in mind I realized I might need to take the good with the bad. If a prospective buyer keeps this in mind also, they may just discover their new most favourite musician/s as the talent just cannot be ignored. Take a punt on any of these as you'll be amazed and pleasantly surprised. Here goes: SOLD *** Todd Rundgren - Todd - 2LP GFC on Original Bearsville Label - Classic Todd - NM / M+ Best copy for its age - $25.00 (JOEY1125) *** Todd Rundgren - Initiation - NM / M+ - $14.00 A review: The first six cuts are pretty cool prog-pop songs a la Rundgren. However, they are rather incongruous with the strictly progressive, monolithic, and very experimental synth laden 36 minute composition "A Treatise On Cosmic Fire". Initially, I was only going to give this album four stars but "Treatise" alone makes it worthy of five. Rundgren plays everything on this spacy symphonic masterpiece and proved himself to be a modern day Beethovan. There is nothing quite like it and it really has to be heard in it's entirety to be truely appreciated. So if you have 36 uninterrupted minutes to spare, a penchant for the experimental, and an open mind then enjoy. SOLD *** Todd Rundgren - Something / Anything - 2LP GFC - EX / NM - $25.00 (JOEY1125) *** Utopia (Todd Rundgren) - Deface The Music - VG / Mint - $12.50 SOLD *** Utopia - Oblivion - Ex / M - $14.00 (JOEY1125) *** Utopia - Utopia - Incl bonus 5 track EP - NM / M+ - $20.00 Here's a review: Democracy in action. Yes, it's Todd's group. Yes, Todd engineered and produced it. But this is truly a group effort. Lead vocals and composer duties are shared almost equally along side Todd. 15 three minute power-pop/new wave songs and not a bad one in sight. Kasim has lead vocals on three songs, Willie on two, Roger on Two, Todd on three, and Todd and Kasim share lead on four of them. Starts off with Libertinefeaturing Kasim on lead vocals. One of his best vocals ever and the song is a flat out rocker. Roger has the great keyboard solo that you would swear was Todd on guitar. Feet Don't Fail Me Now was their "hit" off this album and an accompanying video was on MTV for a little while. Roger does lead vocals on this tight keyboard driven Beatle-esque song. Neck On Upand Princess Of The Universeare two flat out rockers sung by Willie. Princess is one of the best songs/vocal on the entire album. I'm Looking At You But I'm Talking To Myselfis a typical Todd ballad, ala Compassion. It's a great song but sounds like it belongs more on one of Todd's solo albums. Hammer In My Hearthas Todd taking on lead vocals on a great shouting rocker. I believe he might have shred a vocal chord or two while recording this. Infrared and Ultravioletis a minor trip into psychedelia, with a little backwards guitar thrown in for good measure. Say Yeahand Chapter and Verseare both power-pop rock songs ala Badfinger/Big Star. Musicianship and production are simply outstanding. The band sounds tighter than it's ever sounded before, or after. That there was this great of a rocking album out there in 1982 and it went virtually unnoticed, should be a crime. *** Utopia - Swing to the Right - EX / NM - $12.50 SOLD *** Kevin Ayers - Sweet Deceiver rare Orig Island Label - ILC (SRWORC) NM/ M+ - Played bass and sang for Gong and Soft Machine. But that's Todd, isn't it? Great songs, great production, great performances. A solid effort by Utopia. They finally start to sound like a band, rather then Todd's side project. All four members are firing on all cylinders with composing, playing and singing. SOLD ***Amazing Blondel - Inspiration - EX / Ex - $9.00 (AUDIOHOBBS) SOLD - Small Faces - Magic Moments - M- / M - great compilation from 1976. $16.00 (WIMBO) RESERVED ***The John Renbourn Group - A Maid in Bedlam - M- (although a gift message on the top rear cover) / M- an original UK releases on the Transatlantic label - fantastic cover art- $14.00 (ANANTH) A few thoughts: Perhaps my favourite Renbourn album, a little bit straighter than some of his others (if you can apply "straight" to an album that tries to fuse traditional British folk with Indian classical music) and a little bit brighter too -- this is most definitely a morning album, not an evening one. But it's so delicate and joyful, and as an added bonus features Jacquie McShee's best singing since her Pentangle days. An absolutely essential album of British folk. The arrangements of these traditional songs are beautiful and Jacqui McShee's vocals are as good as it gets. Fans of Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span should definitely check out this album. Played for Quicksilver Messenger Service and Jeff Beck Group so his ability is assured. Rare album from a talented guy. - $16.00 A review: Nicky Hopkins, known primarily as an excellent session piano player who contributed key parts to songs by The Rolling Stones, John Lennon, and George Harrison--just to name a few--turns in a refreshing effort on his solo LP The Tin Man Was a Dreamer. Hopkins' voice is surprisingly strong for a guy known to just tinkle the ivories, hovering somewhere in the range of a young Todd Rundgren trying to sound like Harry Nilsson. Tin Man is a remarkably consistent album, highlighted by "Edward" and the goofy rocker "Banana Anna." As a veteran session man, Hopkins was able to secure a solid lineup of musicians to help him out, including George Harrison (credited as George O'Hara), Beatles associate Klaus Voorman, soon-to-be hit maker Chris Rea, Chris Spedding, Mick Taylor, and Rolling Stones associates Bobby Keys and Jim Price. David Briggs, Neil Young's long-time producer, keeps things sounding sharp. This is one of those fine little early 1970s albums that's ripe for a rediscovery. This O.O.P minor masterpiece now fetches big money but yours for $35.00 (I see a cassette version offered for $350.00!!!! WTF! (CHARLIE BIRD) ***Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads) - The Red & The Black - NM (ILS) / NM - Often neglected solo outing from one of the best bands from the 80's. Never released on CD!! Go figure! $16.00 Here's a review: Sounds like Remain in Light with the edges filed off, which isn't as bad a thing as you might think. Jerry Harrison's voice comes across as a toned down David Byrne, and he's no substitute, but it suits the music, and the songs here are in a funky new wave style. When you put it together with Byrne and Eno's My Life in the Bush of Ghosts and Tom Tom Club's debut, you get a better insight into how Talking Heads collaborated to rise above their individual talents. Byrne gets most of the credit, but Harrison is a force of his own, and even without Talking Heads, he likely would have come to some degree of success. This record unfortunately, has never been reissued, but it's worth tracking down and hearing. NM (SRWOC) / M - Very rare and obscure UK import on the Sire label. - $15.00 2 Reviews: Although there is a special stress on the guitar playing on Magician – a lot of pedaling and flowery guitar riffs – the songs are arranged quite generously. The good urban and country blues prevail in the collection. The balladic “Windy Baker Street” and elaborate “Take Me Back” are the songs that impressed me most. Mildly country flavored prog rock, with acoustic guitar, Harmonica, piano, and wah-wah gutar. consitent and surprisingly good overall. Grades - 1 B+, 3 B's, 3 B-'s, a C+, and a C. From the U.K. SOLD -- Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich - 24 Greatest Hits 2LP - GFC - NM - small amount of shelf wear - nothing serious / NM - As close to mint as you'll see - a few very light scuffs that don't affect play. EX+ = Not quite a near mint, may have a few more scuffs or light scratches but should be fine for most people. EX = May have deeper / longer scratches or marks that may show up on some turntables. VG = Will have more marks and scratches and may affect play to a varying degree or introduce some extraneous noise that may be audible during quieter passages. N.B. Where albums have a clear mark or scratch I have, where possible play checked them to determine if any issues became apparent and noted the result accordingly. I haven't been able to play check any 45rpm discs as my system no longer supports this speed. The Nuts and Bolts......... I regret to advise I am reluctantly selling the remainder of my collection to help raise some money to enable me to have some of my own dental work done. I previously held a similar sale in October 2013 to raise funds to help out a mate get his teeth done but this is entirely different in that I will be the recipient of the money raised. I was just quoted $11,000 to have a titanium post & crown fitted and whilst I am sure this dentist believes he is worth that sort of money, I don't feel like making installments on his wife's Ferrari. I obtained another quote for around $4,000 per tooth so it begs the question? I have 2 teeth that were recently "lost" with a 3rd possibly on the way out so I could be up for significant money. It might be cheaper to have this work done in Thailand but I need to sell some vinyl first before I can chose the best option. I have been out of work for 3 years and as not many people employ old farts like me over 60, I am keeping busy doing charity work instead, ......oh and cleaning records.... I am therefore offering for sale the remainder of my collection from over 4 decades and will upload a series of lists which will include music from a fairly diverse range of styles including, rock / country / folk / jazz-fusion / progressive rock / vintage rock / 80's new wave / instrumental / world / electronic / singer songwriter / 12" Singles etc. There will be a number of different lists following the format of these genre but the underlying selling information will be common to all lists. Therefore if you wanted to reserve some titles from the jazz-fusion list, please indicate your interest in that separate thread. Do the same for the progressive rock list and so on. Please don't send me a PM saying you want such and such an album. Post your interests directly in each thread. This ensures there should be no dispute as to when a title was reserved if your interest is recorded and time stamped within each. As Marc has advised me there is no way to increase my personal message limit of 200, it makes sense for any reservation requests to be done manually by each member within the threads themselves. Transparent / Simple / Quick. Suggestions to reserve items in the Rock Genre Avatar - Joe McAgates Your Name - Boris Item/s wanted - Johnny Winter - Blues - Justine's Beaver - The 36 LP Best of Collection... (in my dreams) Postcode 3250 Also mention any others you want from any other lists and add your details to those lists. This will time stamp and record your name within each list and help eliminate any disputes over who reserved anything first. As I am often away from my home computer, I would be unable to record your interests for you as someone else may have lodged a request correctly 5 minutes later. E.G. Also want 2 x Miles Davis - XXX & YYY from the jazz and Slayer - Bla Bla Bla from the vintage rock list - details posted there separately. So, if you wanted 5 items from 3 different lists but only recorded your intentions in one list and someone else recorded the same wants correctly in each list, the other guy's details would have to prevail within the list/s where you didn't enter your details. This would be checked time-wise. These LPs have all come from my own personal collection and are for the most part in mint condition. Some have been bought new, some sent to me for review, while others have been sourced after scouring through the used record shops decades ago searching for a copy in the best possible condition. Many are very old, some on original labels and obviously quite collectable. I have tried my best to price them according to their desirability, general value and some acknowledgment of the difficulty and time I experienced in tracking some elusive titles down. In many cases the copy I am selling is THE only one I have ever seen with many being long out of print. Some of these would now be considered quite hard to locate in the same condition as mine. I never lent them or played them at parties etc and hated annoying clicks, pops and farts so the vinyl condition should, for the most part be more than acceptable to most people. (Let's say mint minus to mint plus with maybe an excellent dozen or two LP's). You have my assurance they have been well cared for which is a lot more than can be said for most people's hacked up copies you might stumble across from time to time in some market or garage sale. Some are over 40 years old. Due to the relative obscurity of some of these titles, they may have spent some time in a variety of record racks before I stumbled across them so be aware that some covers may have ring wear or sleeve deterioration of a varying degree. Being a totally addicted music nut, I often snapped up anything I could locate, (being very mindful of the discs condition) but often ran out of time to play them all. I was also able to spend quite freely on my collection until I remarried in the mid 80's when that habit ceased immediately. Bugger! I would estimate I may not have played up to 30-40% of these records although I may have heard the music from other formats. They have been stored upright in a 8' x 4' purpose built wall unit and kept away from prying eyes and kids fingers. They were played on a Linn Sondek LP12 until I sold it in the late 70's and thereafter on a Thorens. Except where noted, I only have one copy of each of these LP's. You will find a lot of what is being sold is amongst the band's best output as I tried to steer clear of mediocre music. I also encourage you to experiment with some of the lesser known titles that you may have overlooked when you were younger. To ignore some of these lesser known albums could be a mistake as thankfully, the world's best prog (& other musicians) released way more excellent music than you and I would ever have the time to hear in a lifetime. You just have to have known it existed upon release because if an album didn't sell well, it was often quickly deleted and then became impossibly hard to find years later. When renewed interest in earlier music was assisted by the great resources of the internet, it meant more people wanted a part of the action and so the renewed interest in vinyl exploded as expected. During the 70's / 80's I did exactly the opposite and snagged just about every decent title I could when the opportunity arose, often replacing sad looking vinyl with better copies. Trust me, you are unlikely to ever see anything like this amount of music or the variety ever again from the one source. Obscurity of The Music Much of the remainder of my collection is pretty obscure as that was the general style of music I preferred so if you are wanting lots of commercial stuff that everyone else had, then I may not have much to offer you. If you are however, searching for those elusive gems you may not have been able to track down elsewhere or simply forgotten it existed, then you might need to check these lists when they are uploaded. I also urge you to be a bit experimental and take a gamble with any choices you might make as records of this diversity and genre may not appear too often in used record shops. Since 2010, I know whenever I looked through any used record shops, I rarely found a lot of what I had collected so don't believe things have changed that much since then. I have therefore also priced obscure records that, although quite rare, may not have the huge collectability and price that other items might have. This will obviously be to your advantage. Postage Issues - LPs Rates for Australia Post are quite frankly a joke however, to try and keep costs down for you, I have a number of proposals: For anyone that wants a single LP mailed off, the current price for a package sent via the standard Parcel Post service, up to 500 grams is $7.95 to just about anywhere in Australia. I will place the LP between 2 sheets of stiff folded cardboard to afford maximum protection for an economical price. Reducing the dimensions of the cardboard slightly and assuming 2 LPs with only standard covers and a poly sleeve, I have managed to come in just under 500 grams so this might also be an option for those on a budget, wanting 2 records with no extra sleeves or booklets. A standard LP and one with a GFC may however, take this over the 500 grams limit, at which point, the price goes up considerably to $15.15 for 1KG. Australia Post also now charge a basic rate of $8.95 within the same state for a parcel between 500gms and 22Kg plus a variable distance charge per kilo or part thereof. So a 3.1Kg parcel sent from here to Cairns would cost $8.95 plus 4 x $1.70 = $15.75. For parcels sent interstate, the basic charge increases to $11.45 plus the various distance surcharges. However, for $18.00 Australia Post offers a pre-paid 435mm x 510mm satchel option for parcels weighing up to 5Kgs to anywhere in Australia. This option would suit anyone wanting a larger number of records as I can arrange for more substantial and protective padding without the worry of the extra weight adding too much to the cost. This service is the standard "Parcel Post" option and advertises delivery within 2 days which I believe would suit most buyers. Previous record sales I have conducted were sent out in an unused pizza box and then inserted inside a flexible padded bag however, I feel the $18.00 all you can eat option allows for the most bang for the buck and should enable members to have up to between 16-18 albums sent for the same price. I can use the same pizza boxes plus some bubble wrap / polystyrene sheets inside one of these satchels to provide the best protection. Deliveries to your post office box or place of work is fine by me but deliveries to your home address whereby the parcel may be left in the sun / rain by the postie may result in some tears at your end. I obviously cannot be responsible for any records that get warped as a result of being left out in the weather so suggest you make arrangements to minimize this from happening. Condition of discs. As mentioned earlier, the discs will for the most part be in great shape although I cannot possibly check all surfaces before dispatch for any unusual blemishes, dimples or marks. I have spent some considerable time checking each disc and while this has been purely visual, I believe by pre-cleaning most of them (95%), already on my RCM, any issues should have become more immediately visible. I have play tested any that had any visible defects and sincerely hope to ensure that everyone gets a decent crack at this collection and that the conditions, as quoted, will meet or exceed your expectations. I have spent the last 2-3 months cleaning, sorting, grading, pricing and listing everything and believe I grade my records fairly and only ask a reasonable price to ensure they actually get sold. Guys, I need to raise upwards of $10,000 so I need to sell my collection, pure and simple. I don't wish to rip anyone off yet I don't want to be left too short of my target amount either. I hope that seems fair with all of you. Dig deep if you can and support the SNA ethos and camaraderie that has supported you. I am also adding some third party reviews about some of the lesser known titles and have almost completed most of my lists and will have them ready to upload to Marc shortly. Please keep an eye out for them and take advantage of what I am sure will represent one of the best opportunities to buy some really collectible music you are ever likely to see. There are many, many hundreds up for grabs. I know that I could easily offload many of these collectible records on ebay / Gemm or other sites and make more money however, as I feel more personally connected to the SNA community I feel it may be more beneficial to restrict the sale to SNA members only. There are some items in my collection that are also ridiculously rare, worth a small fortune and may be beyond the awareness of some of the SNA brigade. I might opt to offload the really expensive items elsewhere but may keep a separate list for these special items if anyone was SERIOUSLY interested. I know a lot of other SNA members who bought records from me before were amazed at the quality of the discs so please dig deep, treat yourself to an early Christmas present or three and make someone smile again. Looking forward to your kind support and seeing some serious interest in the remainder of my collection. With my sincere thanks in advance. Greg (A donation will also be made to SNA upon completion of the sale). BTW - A music mate returned home from a short holiday some years ago to find all his records and stereo gear stolen. Whoever took his gear had time to weed out all the desirable stuff but left him with a small batch of children's records, a variety of world music / South American , a few Jane Fonda workout discs and some Demis Roussos. As he can no longer play any music he was hoping to piggyback onto this sale and offer these in 2 batches as follows: RESERVED - 10 various children's records (some great titles here for the kids) - $25.00 plus postage (AUDIOHOBBS) 11 various world music / ethnic / J.F. records - $25.00 plus postage If you have a kind heart and sufficient cash to help my friend out I will be happy to add these to any other records you may wish to buy from me and can consolidate them all together to help defray postage costs. Not being insured has really crushed my friend as he had some seriously nice equipment and equally nice music, (some of it rarer than mine). A hard lesson learned I guess but please help out if you can. Cheers!
