  1. A completely new direction for me, so I'm starting a new thread. Adding this to the old thread did not make sense. Said I'd stay away from valve pwr amps; and had reservations about horns, but stuff comes up and I made a change to what I never envisaged. It sounds good, but still more changes to come. From Magneplanar 20.7 to Trio XD. From AVM MA 8.2 to AR Ref 160M. From Koetsu Onyx to Ortofon MC Anna. The Onyx had a low output resulting in the phonostage running out of gain on the MG20.7. The MC Anna has even lower output, but luckily the change to Trio XD gives me plenty of gain to easily cover the low output of the MC Anna. For over two decades I have not been happy with my analog set up. It has under performed. I think I needed to use a step up transformer for the Onyx and have the Onyx retipped by Koetsu. With the MC Anna I love my analog sound. The Trio is not flat to 100hz. The REL does not go much above 120hz. We have a problem Houston. No midbass in the current setup. I've been moving the subs around, but there is no cure for component limitations. (See Later, I changed Trio setup). These pictures are ugly, but I'm an audiophile not a bloomin' home decorator. The setup is Ortofon MC Anna on Graham 1.5t on Aura tt. AR ph8 phonostage. AR Ref 6 preamp. AR Ref 160M pwr amp. Trio XD maiin speakers. REL 212se subs. Cables are Audioquest and Synergistic Research. Two dedicated 20A circuits and 2 dedicated 15A circuits. Custom fuses on any component that needs them. They do reduce noise floor.
  2. This GTG is for those left in Melbourne over summer. The replacement tweeters are almost run in. Sunday 13 January 2018 starting at 1.30pm. Leave the kids at home. Changed my GTGs to summer. There is less traffic and more parking in this area this time of the year, but I can't understand why people drive here instead of using the train or tram. Get on public transport and you can have a drink.
  3. The Audio Research PH6 Tube phono stage, have to pop the hood to fit the supplied valves, which gives the chance to grab a shot of the innards back on the hifi unit,
  4. Hi everyone, I'm in MEL and have a small space (3x3m) as a listening area within a larger room (4x9m) and want an amp/speaker combo up to $10k. I listen to acoustic (ECM label), jazz, solo piano, modern classical as well as electronic / ambient / drone music. No rock, pop or doof music. So far, I've really liked: 1. Audio Research VSI-60 teamed with Martin Logan Vantages (auditioned at Tivoli Hi-Fi) 2. Nuforce IA-18 with Ambience 1600 ribbons (auditioned at Carlton A/V); 3. Consonance 880-100 with Osborn Eclipse (auditioned at Greg's). Although I love their sound, I'm wary of the electrostatics / ribbons because they're sensitive to placement and, realistically with my space, I'll have to push any speakers right up against the rear wall and I'll have precious little side room to play with either. Furthermore, the space between the speakers is fully occupied by a large built-in bookshelf. Any suggestions for gear that I can audition in MEL would be helpful. Thanks in advance and I look forward to being part of this community, Andrew
  5. I have been admiring all the systems being showcased and all of them look terrific. Beautifully set up in gorgeous or inviting rooms. I look at my rig and the best I can say is it looks industrial. I have industrial high-end audio. It has always been a case of form follows function for me. I try to get it to sound right first and then think about prettying it up. I am thinking of buying a Symposium Isis rack to pretty it up but I have to balance that purchase against buying a pair of Magnepan DWM woofers. The first rule to putting a good system together is getting the right speaker for the room. Ofcourse, I did not start off with the MG20.7 and I'm not really a fan of planar speakers, but for the price, the MG20.7 is perfect for this room. I never ever thought I would reach this level of sound in my life time, but you keep improving the system and one day you'll find you are listening to good sound, not just okay sound. When I bought this place I envisaged it as a music listening room. I ended up surprising myself by how good it is. I bought the Aura+Graham 1.5t secondhand from Mike Kontor when he was at Armadale. A few years ago he told me he sold his Aura tt. I think this tt was his.

  7. Item: Audio Research SP14 Tube Preamp with Phono Stage in Excellent Condition Location: Leichhardt Price: $3,500. Item Condition: Pre owned Reason for selling: Clearance Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Credit card on pick up, Direct deposit Extra Info: Can freight at extra cost Here is a familiar name among many audio enthusiasts around the world "Audio Research" These guys have made some of the best preamps and power amps for the keen music lovers. This is a single-chassis unit, shares an outward appearance with the SP9 Mk.II, with half again as many knobs and twice the number of toggle switches. Exceptional sounding and transparent phono stage, with a build quality like a sherman tank. Photos: Advertisements without photos of the actual item will not be approved.
  8. Item: Audio Research Reference 150SE Power Amplifier Location: Melbourne Price: $14,000. Less than a Reference 75SE! RRP: $24,000 SNA Donation: 1% of sale Item Condition: Excellent Reason for selling: Upgraded Payment Method: Pickup/Delivery - Cash, EFT, COD, Paypal, bitcoin Extra Info: I'm the original owner of this wonderful amplifier which has performed flawlessly since I bought it only October last year from Carlton Audio Visual. It is an Australian model with 770 valve hours on it, effectively "just run in" and I have all the original packaging and documentation. Incredibly rich tonal palate, massive sound stage, superb neutrality, extremely quiet, bloom, speed, rhythm and drive and extension galore. Truly a magnificent sound and easily sounds much weightier than its 170W rating - the control on complex passages is astonishing presumably thanks to its "enriched class A/B" bias which gives about 110W of class A. A truly remarkable amplifier, I would never have dreamed of selling this baby if not for the fact that I upgraded to the ARC 250SE monoblocks. Shipping can be arranged at suitable cost but local pick up preferred given its 35kg weight. Includes a 2m Audio Principe Premium Shielded power cable with furutech C19 adapter ($350.) 11. Item: Audio Research EC-4 three way active tube crossover Location: Adelaide (will post interstate) Price: $450 Item Condition: Good used condition Reason for selling: Using digital DSP (shock, horror) Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: This is a classic and rarely seen three way active crossover by Audio Research. It dates from the mid to late seventies. Frequencies are adjusted by changing capacitors on the circuit board. Crossover points are selectable at 50/100/400/500/800/1k/1.5k/2k/3.5k/5kHz. Uses 6 x 12AX7 tubes. This particuar example has been modified both for practical reasons (to operate at 240v) and for sonic improvements. A new 240v transformer has been added, along with an assortment of upgraded capacitors and resistors. In the process, RCA connectors have been moved to the front of the chassis. Unfortunately these modifications have not been carried out with aesthetics in mind. Nevertheless, if you can get past the less than immaculate appearance, this crossover will not disappoint. This is a rare, collectible – and for someone with an active three way system, a serious consideration. Info and photos of this unit in its original state can be found here: http://www.arcdb.ws/EC4/EC4.html I am happy to package and send this item interstate at buyer's expense. Please budget $30 to $50 for this, depending on your location. Similarly, a buyer in Adelaide is welcome to collect in person from the Adelaide CBD. 13. Item: Audio Research GSi75 Integrated Amp/DAC Location: Douglas HiFi - 3/116 Mounts Bay Rd, Perth Price: $25999 $18500 Item Condition: Ex-Shop Demo - Cosmetically As New w/Full Warranty and all Original Packaging and Accessories. Reason for selling: Recently Discontinued Model Payment Method: Cash, Paypal, Direct Deposit, Master, Visa Shipping available Australia Wide Extra Info: With its gorgeous artisan style the Audio Research GSi75 shows off a welded chassis, thick front plate and the combination of new and old ARC cues. As the name suggests, the integrated is a (2x) 75W design, using the KT150s (first used in the GS150 power amp) and now featuring throughout Audio Research’s lines. In addition to being a good quality integrated amplifier, the Audio Research GSi75 sports a very fine phono stage, an outstanding upsampling DAC, and even a very high performance headphone amp. The physicality of the GSi75 is not something to be sniffed at either - It’s a large, sophisticated integrated amplifier for the modern music lover: it does everything you could think of, does it all well, and exudes a sense of absolute class in the process. It’s a tube amp for people who like the sound and the idea of tube amps, but don’t like all the fuss and bother they sometimes cause. Insert, bias, play… it’s all made extremely simple. The onboard phono stage is quiet and dynamic, a perfect match for the rest of the amplifier. Rather than just sounding nice – something many valve designs actively aim for – this one majors on insight and agility. It reveals the harmonic richness in the sound of a piano and renders it with a subtlety of dynamics... equally, when asked to rock out it does a wonderful job of dynamics and slam without ever sounding either harsh or soft and wooly. The DAC – which can be set to upsample to 24-bit, 352.8/384kHz (depending on original sampling frequency) also supports DoP DSD replay – there is also ‘fast’ and ‘slow’ digital filters which help cope with the vagaries of modern (and especially online) digital sources. The DAC allows you to access whatever files you have on hand; 16-bit/44khz all the way up to 2x DSD, so you won’t be left out in the cold. There are a bevy of digital inputs as well; RCA, Toslink and USB all help make the GSi75 the hub of your digital music world. There are also (3x) standard RCA Line Level inputs to complement the aforementioned Phono and DAC inputs. 14. Item: Audio Research Classic 60 Valve Stereo Power Amplifier Location: Melbourne Price: $3000 Item Condition: Very Good Reason for selling: Upgraded Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, EFT, Bitcoin, COD Only Extra Info: This is a legendary stereo power amplifier with quad matched Sovtek 6550 output valves which still have an estimated ~1000 hours life on them. These valves turn this already great sounding amplifier into an amazingly lifelike musical presentation. This amp's 60W rating belies just how capable this amp is at driving complex loads with ease. It still rivals most amplifiers available today. Despite being a valve amp, like all ARC power amps it is actually a hybrid amp with a solid state input stage and valve output stage. There is a minor warp on the tube cage and a cracked plastic capacitor cover (no effect on functionality). It is an original 240V one for the Australian market. This amp has been lovingly taken care of since it was purchased and I still have the original packaging and manual. Delivery can be arranged. 25. Moving on this gorgeous sounding Pre Amp I intended to keep, but I've decided I prefer the functionality of my other pre amp so no need to have this collecting dust. I am clearing out a couple of things to make way for some other toys I can use with my main gear. There are a couple of chips in the paint on the handles, I thought I would take them off and drop them to a powder coater who'll charge $25 to do them but I just dont have the time during the day at the moment. It is a lovely sounding unit.
