  1. The August 2013 meeting of the Sydney Audio Club sees us once again at Dence Park for an afternoon of fine music and sound and convivial company. Each month, the Sydney Audio Club presents the finest in high end audio systems for our members and guests. It's a bit like a private audio show once a month where you can hear and discuss equipment that you might not otherwise have the chance to audition. And you can bring along your own music to test the capabilities of the system or to just share with like-minded music lovers in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. This month we will feature Lenard Audio (refer to http://lenardaudio.com/index.html). Lenard Audio is a design and consulting company specialising in electro-acoustic engineering. All Lenard Audio sound systems are designed as fully 4-way active systems for many audio applications including domestic, commercial, professional, studio monitoring and cinema. The key principal behind the design of all Lenard Audio products is to replicate the virtual reality of musical instruments; allowing the listener to experience the music as it was recorded. Lenard Audio was started by John Lenard Burnett during what may have been the most exciting time in Australian rock history, 1966 -1972. John is still very much active in the company today along with his daughter Nel. Detailed history of Lenard Audio can be found at http://www.lenardaudio.com/history.html. John also started the Lenard Audio Institute – more detail of that can be found at http://lenardaudio.com/education/. When you are there, mouse-over the “Subjects†link at the top left of the page to discover a wealth of information about many aspects of audio. We are fortunate to have both John and Nel as our guest presenters on the day. The marketing style of Lenard Audio has a strong focus on education and re-connecting with music. Consequently, the presentation part will be brief to allow more opportunity for listening and Q&A. The main speakers that will presented is the Sarabande (refer to http://lenardaudio.com/sarabande_standard.html). Sarabandes are large speakers that house five 100 watt solid state amplifiers and a 4-way active cross-over within each cabinet. A large aesthetically styled heat sink situated on the front of each cabinet holds the amplifiers. The sub bass is produced by two 12 inch speakers located within their own chamber in each cabinet. There is a large port at the bottom of the cabinet where the bass frequency emanates. The pre-amplifier will be the highly regarded new Classe CP-800. Front-ends will be the new Oppo BDP-105 and the club owned Sugden Connoisseur BD-1 turntable with a Shure V15 Type 3 cartridge. The phono stage will be the NAD PP 2i that was very favourably reviewed recently in Australian HiFi. The second half of the music sessions will be our popular BYO. Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all. So bring along your favourite music on CD, SACD, flash drive or vinyl. All we ask is that the music and recordings be interesting. We'll ask you to tell us a little about the artist/recording before it is played. Tracks over 6 minutes will be faded out, to give everyone a fair go. Whether you are a novice or a seasoned veteran, you will have the opportunity to listen, learn and share your experiences with others of a similar mind. Members and guests welcome – we are a very friendly club so you don't need to know anyone to join us for an afternoon of fine music and sound. We will welcome you at the door. Venue: Epping Creative Centre Address: 26 Stanley St, Epping When: Sunday 11th August 2013 Doors open 1pm Meeting starts at 2pm Best regards, Tom Waters President Sydney Audio Club www.sydneyaudioclub.org.au tomwaters@sydneyaudioclub.org.au On behalf of Tom and the Sydney Audio club Inc. 2. The July 2013 meeting of the Sydney Audio Club sees us once again at Dence Park for an afternoon of fine music and sound and convivial company. It’s Vintage/Classic time once again. We had a lot of wonderful vintage gear last year and this year is looking just as good. For our meeting, we are considering anything pre-1995 to be vintage/classic equipment. For the last couple of years the cut-off date has been 1990 – time marches on though so we’ve moved the date a bit. We will have two main systems this year. Some of the components include: - a Pioneer SA-7500 amp - a Pioneer SX-1980 receiver - a Sony X555ES CD player - Sony and Tascam DAT machines - a Meridian CD player - an A. R. Sugden & Co. Connoisseur BD1 turntable complete with a SME tone-arm and a Shure V15 Type 3 cartridge - B&W DM 220 speakers - a Pioneer reverb amp from the 70s - a NAD 7240PE receiver - a Transcriptor Hydraulic Reference, with Fluid Arm and Stanton 681eee - Japanese valve amps - various cassette decks - a Reel to Reel deck We’re working on a Japanese theme from source through to speakers for one system. We’ll also have lots of gear on static display as well – such as a pair of B&W DM4 speakers. The second half of the music sessions will be our popular BYO. Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all. So bring along your favourite music on vinyl or CD. (Sorry, we won’t be able to play flash drives or SACD as the players aren’t vintage… yet.) All we ask is that the music and recordings be interesting. 3. The June 2013 meeting of the Sydney Audio Club sees us once again at Dence Park for an afternoon of fine music and sound and convivial company. This month we will feature Usher equipment kindly supplied by Ethan Lim of the distributor Westan (refer to http://www.westan.com.au/) and Matt Walker of The Cable Connection in Carlton (refer to http://www.thecableconnection.com.au/). Our main speakers will be the Usher Mini Dancer 2. The Dancer 2 is a 2-way system with a 1.25" diamond DMD dome tweeter, and two mid-low woofers in a MTM configuration. They are fairly sensitivity at 90 dB @ 1 watt/1m, with a frequency response of 28 Hz ~ 40 kHz. We hope to also have the Usher Mini X (book shelf speakers) should they get back in time from a review. The Mini X also has the diamond DMD tweeter, and can reproduce music with lucidity and accuracy. The warmth of a performance is portrayed accurately, neither embellishing nor becoming over-analytical while maintaining a wide, holographic soundstage. Amplification will be the Usher R1.5 power amplifier. The R-1.5 amplifier is designed to drive any loudspeaker, producing warm, "tube like" sound quality. It has been constructed with premium parts, including metal film resistors and film capacitors, reinforcing Usher's reputation for high-quality manufacturing. It delivers 150wpc into 8 Ohm speakers (260wpc into 4 Ohms). Also on hand will be the Usher DV9 processor. We will also have a Classe CP-800 preamp/DAC. The CP-800 introduces a new architecture for high-end preamplifiers. Capitalizing on the potential for computer-based audio and employing powerful processing tools, the CP-800 offers compelling performance, features and value. Speaker cables will be the Usher Rapport speaker cables. Interconnects will be Nordost Frey and Synergistic Research, power cords Analysis Oval Plus. Front-ends will be the new Oppo BDP-105 and the club owned Sugden Connoisseur BD-1 turntable with a Shure V15 Type 3 cartridge. Yes, it’s a humble turntable, but it pleasantly surprises all with its musicality. The phono stage will be the NAD PP 2i that was very favourably reviewed in the current issue of the Australian HiFi. And for the vinyl lovers, Stephen Price of Tube Sound Audio will briefly present the ReVirginizer record cleaning system. 4. The March 2014 meeting of the Sydney Audio Club sees us once again at Dence Park for an afternoon of fine music and sound and convivial company. For March, we have a great system from Audio Note UK presented by Bryan Fletcher of Finn Bespoke Technology Pty Ltd, the Australian distributor for Audio Note UK. Please refer to http://www.audionote.com.au/Audio_Note_Australia.html. Bryan will be presenting the same system that was presented at the Australian Audio and AV Show in October last year. Detail of that system and some photos can be seen at http://www.audionote.com.au/2013_Melbourne_HiFi_Show.html. So if you missed it then, now is your opportunity to hear it..! Bryan is a very amicable fellow - I’m sure you’ll find his presentation to be both informational and entertaining. The equipment line-up will be as follows: Audio Note CDT 3 Transport with the Black Pallas Digital cable. (Refer to http://www.audionote.co.uk/products/digital/cdt_three_01.shtml). To quote Audio Note UK from their web site... “The Audio Note CDT 3 transport has a top loading, custom modified Philips CD Pro2LF CD mechanism, power supply with 3 separate mains transformers, Audio Note AN-Vx silver cable for internal digital signal transfer, silver wired digital output transformer using thin laminated core, Audio Note Tantalum resistors.†Audio Note DAC 4 Balanced with Sootto Interconnect. (Refer to http://www.audionote.co.uk/products/digital/dac_4.1x_sig_01.shtml). If you are curious, Sooto stands for “SO Over The TOp!â€. (It has 120 strands of pure silver strands in each conductor, split between 3 different wire gauges. Yes, it’s expensive!) Audio Note M6 Preamp with Sootto Balanced Interconnect. (Refer to http://www.audionote.co.uk/products/preamp/m6_01.shtml). To again quote Audio Note UK from their web site... “Level Four line pre-amplifier, with Audio Noteâ„¢ 1 watt tantalum resistors, Audio Noteâ„¢ silver wiring, 5687 line stage with novel power supply design based on the patented M10, 6X5, OB2, ECL82, Black Gateâ„¢ WKz filter caps, Audio Noteâ„¢ in-house designed and wound output transformers with copper primary and an Audio Noteâ„¢ silver wired secondary on an 0.1 mm Audio Noteâ„¢ AN-Perma 50 nickel double C-cores.Phono version has MM phono stage with Audio Note copper foil capacitors and 6072A double triodes.†Audio Note Ongaku Kensei Stereo power amplifier with ELROG 211 Tubes and Sogon LX-96 Speaker cable. The Ongaku Kensei is a fairly new addition (January 2012). It’s based on the Ongaku Integrated, but has no preamp section and has a very high quality balanced input instead. The new manufacture of these German made ELROG 211 tubes are a minor miracle in themselves, refer to http://www.audionote.com.au/NEW_-_Elrog_Tubes.html. Audio Note AN-E Alnico SPe Signature Speakers. (Refer to http://www.audionote.co.uk/products/speakers/an-e_01.shtml). From the UK web site… “The AN-E must be the most efficient wide band speaker of moderate size on the market, with an effective bandwidth from 18 Hz to 23 kHz at -6 dB, efficiency better than 95 dB/m and a dynamic headroom above 108 dB. The extremely high efficiency is retained well over the bandwidth, and makes the AN-E very suited to the high quality, low-power triode amplifiers that will form the future of music reproduction, once our obsession with power and specifications is generally recognized as folly.†The second half of the music sessions will be our popular BYO. Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all. Please note: There will be no turntable, nor will there be any SACD or hi-res playback options. So bring along your favourite music on CD only. Guests are always welcome – we are a very friendly club so you don't need to know anyone to join us for an afternoon of fine music and sound. We will welcome you at the door. 7. The October 2013 meeting of the Sydney Audio Club sees us once again at Dence Park for an afternoon of fine music and sound and convivial company. This month we will feature a system from audio enthusiast and repair specialist, Christian Feillafe. Christian has extensive experience with audio equipment designs, circuits and parts. He works for Coda Audio (http://www.coda-audio.com.au/index.html) and services everything from amplifiers to Yamaha recording desks. Christian will be bringing us an interesting and quite unusual system. The main feature would have to be the 6 foot high (per side) stack of modified Quad electrostatic panels. The panels are configured in a D’Appolito style with a bass panel on top and bottom, and a midrange/tweeter panel in between. The midrange/tweeter panels have an incredibly thin 1 micron mylar membrane/diaphragm. The bass panels have a 3 micron mylar membrane. All panels have been fully rewired and have transformers built by Christian. Christian is very familiar with Quad panels – over the years he has rebuilt many for himself and for his friends. Driving these panels will be a rebuilt NAD 3155 power amp delivering 65 wpc. Among the many changes are better CAPs which have opened up the sound appreciably. Christian will also bring a 20 wpc SE amp but we likely won’t be using it much as it doesn’t have the power to drive such large panels in our large room. For Christian’s demonstration he will mostly use a music server as the front-end. He has a Mac Mini running Audirvana, through a SOTM USB convertor, and then into a Benchmark DAC1. The DAC1 is known for good sound at its price point. Christian has upgraded the op amps, the I/V’s and all CAPs as well. And he’s also gone the extra step and built his own external transformer as well..! The sound is quite different from the stock DAC1, and if you didn’t know better and just listened, you probably wouldn’t guess its heritage. Christian’s cables are mostly his own design/build. They are made of pure silver and have thick shields. The result is an open and fast sounding cable. The CD player will be the Gryphon Mikado Signature. It up-samples to 32/192 using AKM DACs and employs a very high quality Class-A output stage. The result is an open, natural, fast and very transparent sound with no brightness. The turntable will be the club’s Sugden Connoisseur BD-1 turntable with a Shure V15 Type 3 cartridge. The phono stage will be the club’s NAD PP 2i that was very favourably reviewed a while ago in Australian HiFi. The second half of the music sessions will be our popular BYO. Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all. So bring along your favourite music on CD, vinyl or flash drive. Guests are always welcome – we are a very friendly club so you don't need to know anyone to join us for an afternoon of fine music and sound. We will welcome you at the door. 8. The May 2014 meeting of the Sydney Audio Club sees us once again at Dence Park for an afternoon of fine music and sound and convivial company. For May, we’ve decided to do something a bit different for us. We’ll have three book shelf speakers vying for your vote during the meeting. Yes, it’s a shoot-out! The contenders for the day will be: Aurelia Magenta speakers: These are great little speakers at a very competitive price point ($1500 AUD per pair). Cameron Keating from MaxMedia in Melbourne is kindly providing these for our meeting. (Refer to http://www.maxmedia.com.au/AURELIA_MAGENTA.html). The Magenta is small but huge with dynamics and bass. The frequency response is 45-20K Hz with 87db sensitivity. The bass quality and depth of the Magenta are one of the best in its class. Its tweeter sports a 2nd generation Energy Controlling Waveguide-technology (ECW). The ECW seamlessly adapts the tweeter to the bass unit at the cross frequency. The overall result is a pleasant and uniform sound with a natural and three-dimensional soundstage. KEF LS-50 speakers: These speakers likely need no introduction. They’ve been receiving raves reviews around the world. (Refer to http://www.kef.com/html/au/showroom/flagship_hi-fi_series/LS50/overview/). This diminutive speaker delivers a rich, multi-dimensional soundstage that is out of all proportion to its size. Their retail price is $1800 AUD per pair. Stones Sound Studio (SSS) Artisan r260 Signature speakers: These speakers provide crystal clear highs, pinpoint imaging, articulate tight and fast bass, and a wide sound stage with low distortion which provides fatigue free long term listening. The drivers are by Peerless and are manufactured to SSS specifications. The mid/bass are 2 x 5" 5 layer treated composite drivers with cast alloy frame. The tweeter are treated soft fabric wide dispersion dome - 27mm (1"). The cabinets have a double laminated 38mm low resonance front baffle. The crossover is at 3.78khz with phase coherent audiophile grade SCR capacitors and non-inductive resistors. The internal wiring is pure copper OFC star configuration, and low loss HF cable. They have a frequency range of 42hz to 25khz and a sensitivity of 92.5db Spl at 1khz/1m. The Artisan retails for $3200 AUD per pair. The supporting act for this shoot-out will include the Marantz SA-11 CD/SACD player and the Audio-gd Master 10 integrated amplifier. Marantz SA-11 CD/SACD player: The SA-11 is an older player but most definitely a worthy and great player. Its Redbook play back is excellent, and its SACD play back was considered amongst the very best at the time. It has a huge toroidal power supply, a vibration-resistant drive mechanism and double-layered bottom plate. Audio-gd Master 10 integrated amplifier: This integrated amplifier has been winning many people over. (Refer to http://www.audio-gd.com/Master/Master10/Master-10EN.htm and http://6moons.com/audioreviews/magnepan2/4.html) The amp is a fully balanced design with a twist: each of the two balanced inputs and two single-ended inputs have their signal converted to current mode before being amplified by a single Class A gain stage. Volume attenuation also takes place in the current domain. A quad FET zero feedback output buffer returns current to voltage drive. The amp has discrete analogue stages without any op-amps or coupling caps in the signal channels. Audio-gd keep their costs down through a direct-selling sales model (approx. $1900 USD). Cabling will be Wireworld and Eichmann. The second half of the music sessions will be our popular BYO. Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all. So bring along your favourite music on CD or SACD. All we ask is that the music and recordings be interesting. We'll ask you to tell us a little about the artist/recording before it is played. 14. The February 2014 meeting of the Sydney Audio Club sees us once again at Dence Park for an afternoon of fine music and sound and convivial company. This month I am very pleased to say that we will be presenting VAF. VAF Research (refer to http://www.vaf.com.au/) has an enviable world-wide reputation for excellent design, engineering and build quality that results in excellent sound quality. The company was founded in 1978 by CEO Philip Vafiadis. The Rolling Stone magazine aptly wrote “The ultimate in high fidelity performance with the best bass in the worldâ€. That was written quite a few years ago and since then, Philip and his passionate and skilled team have continued to let innovation run free leading to constant improvement of their products. Not only will we be presenting VAF product, but Philip himself will be presenting the world debut of their brand new DC-X63 speaker. A prototype of the DC-X63 was presented at the Australian Audio and AV Show in Melbourne last October and received enthusiastic and immediate approval. The Sydney Audio Club will be the first place in the world to see and hear the very first DC-X63 production units. The VAF website has not yet been updated with detail of these new speakers. However, Philip has kindly provided a draft of an upcoming press release that he’d like to share to provide more detail of the new DC-X63: “Is the most technically sophisticated new loudspeaker under $3,000pr now Australian made? With 6 drivers precisely time aligned on 5 individually stepped baffles in a cabinet so intricate it requires robotic precision to make, the new VAF DC-X63 might be just that. “With over 10,000 owners, our DC-X loudspeaker has developed a cult like following in Australia since it was originally released in 1995. This new DC-X63 builds on this incredible legacy. Beyond an evolutionary step, the new DC-X63 is a quantum step in design, and actually mimics the way sounds are produced in real life†said VAF’s founder & CEO, Philip Vafiadis. He went on to say “Whether for music or movies we wanted the sound to be as true to life as possible. That’s very hard to do. It’s even harder in this instance as the DC-X has always been excellent value. Making it affordable simply isn’t possible while using traditional manufacturing techniques to deliver the technical sophistication we aspire to. We had to rethink everything and create something totally anew. That’s what the DC-X63 was born from.†“In the process we solved aesthetic as well as technical problems. A computer controls the machining of the profoundly complex enclosure. This houses and perfectly time aligns the 6 drivers delivering the most realistic 3D presentation of sounds of any DC-X model before it. The enclosure minimises stored energy in all its forms, so the amazingly realistic 3D presentation of sound is also very pure. An Acoustic Skin elegantly covers all this complexity. This design allows each owner to personalise the look of their speakers to compliment their room, whatever their version of beautiful might be. This way every owner gets this amazing VAF sound with a look that they can choose for themselves†With a 10 year guarantee and 30 day safe’n’sound Web guarantee, the DC-X63 is available direct from VAF Research priced from $2,999pr.†The front-end player will be the Playback Design MPS-5 SACD/CD player. This player has a modified Esoteric transport mechanism which provides excellent stability. The DACs handle up to 24/384kHz PCM. The preamp will be the Classe CP-800. This is a well-reviewed preamp/DAC that has received many accolades. The power amps will be the Plinius SA-250 and the Classe CA-400. Both of these amps are real powerhouses. The DC-X63 speakers are quite efficient, but since our room is large we like to have the extra power on hand. And of course, the tonality of the amps is somewhat different. We will decide which amp to use once we’ve evaluated the system on the day in our room. The second half of the music sessions will be our popular BYO. Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all. So bring along your favourite music on CD/SACD. (Sorry, no vinyl this month.) They have 96 db sensitivity and more importantly, 10 ohms nominal and 8.75 ohms minimum impedance, so they are easy to drive. Refer to the review on Stereophile at http://www.stereophile.com/content/devore-fidelity-orangutan-o96-loudspeaker. To quote Art Dudley from this Stereophile review (Dec 2012), he says “My own view is simpler: The O/96 is neither a budget version nor a luxury version of anything else. It's an extremely well-crafted loudspeaker that achieves a combination of strengths that is, as far as I know, unique. The O/96 is distinctly easy to drive with low-power amplifiers, yet it's clearer, wider of bandwidth, and more spatially accomplished than most other high-sensitivity loudspeakers. Colorful yet uncolored, the DeVore Orangutan O/96 is the loudspeaker many of us have been waiting for. Yes, an old Western Electric horn or even an Altec Valencia has more punch and drama, and Quad ESL has even more clarity and nuance of texture and timbre. But the O/96 gives a lot of everything and sacrifices little of anything. I'm thoroughly, giddily impressed.†Art Dudley is usually less effusive than that, so these speakers must be good! LM Audio LM-219IA Integrated Amplifier. Refer to http://www.mcleans.info/shop/productDetails.do?productId=237651 This “Line Magnetic Audio†Integrated Amplifier is a 24 watt Single Ended Class A amp with 300B driver tubes and 310A input tubes. It has adjustable bias via built in meters. Negative feedback is adjustable and defeatable. Power output is displayed via meters. It has two power transformers for dual mono operation, and point to point wiring throughout. The company is based in Zhuhai, Guangdong province, China. PS Audio Direct Stream DAC. Refer to http://www.psaudio.com/products/directstream-dac/ This DAC offers a pure 100% single bit DSD based D to A Converter with a passive output stage and resolution perfect volume and balance controls. It has a simple, direct signal path with only one master clock and offers excellent immunity to jitter from sources. Modified Oppo BDP-95 player. For the front-end, Bill will be bringing a BDP-95 player modified by Joe Rasmussen to Level 3 standard. Refer to http://www.customanalogue.com/jlti_multiplayer.htm. (We will also have a monitor on hand to allow us to play music from USB flash drives in our BYO session.) Auditorium 23 cabling. These are musically, harmonically and texturally rich cables. Not to mention affordable! For speaker cables, refer to http://www.mcleans.info/shop/productDetails.do?productId=225406. For interconnects, refer to http://www.mcleans.info/shop/productDetails.do?productId=225407 This will be a digital only system. Bill will be presenting his system with some of his music played from his Mac. The second half of the music sessions will be our popular BYO. Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all. So bring along your favourite music on CD, SACD or USB flash drive. Sorry, no vinyl this month. Guests are always welcome – we are a very friendly club so you don't need to know anyone to join us for an afternoon of fine music and sound. We will welcome you at the door. 17. The January 2013 meeting of the Sydney Audio Club sees us once again at Dence Park for an afternoon of fine music and sound and convivial company. This month we will have a vinyl based system comprised of Club member components. The turntable and amps will be provided by two members. The amps will be DIY integrated amps with 60-80 wpc. Another member is providing 3 phono-stages: the VTL Deluxe (MM, tubed), the Conrad Johnson Motif MC-7 and the Audio Alchemy VAC-in-the-box. These phono-stages will be pitted against each other in a shootout – we’ll have what will no doubt be an interesting exploration and discussion of the sonic merits of these different phonostages. The speakers will be the Code 5 speakers from Grover Notting. We’ve had the Code 5 speakers at the club before and they were very well received. We may have a member’s pair of Acoustic Research AR92 speakers instead – TBD at this time. The second half of the music sessions will be BYO. The phono-stage voted best in the first session will be used throughout our BYO session. Sources for the entire meeting will be vinyl. Sorry, no digital media this month. Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all. So bring along your favourite records. 18. The Sunday 10th of February meeting of the Sydney Audio Club sees us once again at Dence Park for an afternoon of fine music and sound and convivial company. This month, Stephen Price of Tube Sound Audio (http://www.tubesoundaudio.com.au/) will be bringing us a complete system. It’s been ages since we last had OTL amplifiers at a club meeting – so if you are interested now is your chance to hear them! Stephen will be presenting Output Transformerless (OTL) amplifiers driven by tube phono and tube line preamp stages. He will try to bring two examples, and if so, we will certainly try to hear both. We will have a Class A/B push pull OTL in stereo format and a Class A single ended OTL in dual monoblock configuration. During Stephen’s presentation the front-end will be a turntable. Tube Sound Audio promotes DIY audio. By virtue of their extraordinary sound, Stephen has chosen to focus on OTL tube technology and in particular the products of Transcendent Sound (http://www.transcendentsound.com/Transcendent/Home.html). Late last year he introduced “Amp Camp†- an opportunity for those who have always wanted to build but for various reasons never got started. Through Amp Camp, enthusiasts can achieve extraordinary sound and immense satisfaction without having to mortgage the house. (Check Stephen’s web site for more detail.) The amplifiers and the loudspeakers Stephen is bringing are the product of Tube Sound Audio’s workshops. The loudspeakers will be their own Model 180A featuring a single, full range, high efficiency 15†AlNiCo driver mounted in hand finished Jarrah cabinets. It promises to be a fascinating and musical day! The second half of the music sessions will be BYO. We will have an Oppo BDP-95 on hand for our BYO session for those that wish to bring CD/SACD. Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all. So bring along your favourite discs, black or shiny. All we ask is that the music and recordings be interesting. We'll ask you to tell us a little about the artist/recording before it is played. Tracks over 6 minutes will be faded out, to give everyone a fair go. 19. The September 2012 meeting of the Sydney Audio Club sees us once again at Dence Park for an afternoon of fine music and sound and convivial company. This month we will have a complete system provided by Syntec International (refer to http://www.syntec.com.au). For over 35 years Syntec International has been the Australian and New Zealand distributor for some highly renowned and respected brands of audio equipment. Some of their brands include: Arcam, Bryston, Dynaudio, Lehmann, Manley, MIT, Neumann, Sennheiser and Tangent – to name a few. This month we will have a system comprising Dynaudio and Bryston. The electronics will be a Bryston combo of a 4B-SST power amp, BP26 pre-amp and CD player (please refer to http://www.syntec.com.au/home.php?cat=261). The 4B-SST is a pure dual mono design and offers 300 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 500 watts into 4 with over 1000 watts available in bridged mode. The speakers will be the Dynaudio C2 (please refer to http://www.dynaudio.com/int/home_loudspeaker_systems/confidence/confidence_c2.php). The C2 is a 1.5 meter tall floorstander. It has two Esotar tweeters and two mid/bass drivers with special Kapton voice coil formers that are perfectly integrated by the advanced crossover to yield a seamlessly balanced yet detailed sound and incredible sound staging. We will also have a Sugden Connoisseur BD-1 turntable, very recently refurbished by a club member. It’s definitely no Transrotor but it reportedly sounds pretty good. It has the Shure V15 Type 3 cartridge. The phono stage will be by Graham Slee. Sorry, no music server this month. For this meeting, both music sessions will be BYO. Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all. So bring along your favourite music on CD and vinyl. All we ask is that the music and recordings be interesting. We'll ask you to tell us a little about the artist/recording before it is played. Tracks over 6 minutes will be faded out, to give everyone a fair go. 20. The October 2012 meeting of the Sydney Audio Club sees us once again at Dence Park for an afternoon of fine music and sound and convivial company. This month we will have a system presented by Steven Spurrier of Studio Connections Australia (refer to http://www.studioconnections.com.au). Studio Connections Australia is the Australian distributor for some highly renowned and respected brands of audio equipment. Their brands include: Genelec, Bricasti Design and Drawmer. (All the equipment on the day will be provided by Studio Connections Australia.) This month we will have a system comprising Genelec and Drawmer products. The speakers will be the Genelec 8260A and 8240A models (please refer to http://www.genelec.com). Genelec have been manufacturing professional studio monitors since 1978 and have recently introduced home theatre and installation product ranges. The Genelec 8260A is a three way active system which combines a coaxial driver (MDC™) with the advanced Genelec Directivity Control Waveguide™ (DCW™), ensuring drivers couple coherently over their full operating bandwidth as well as creating coincident mid-frequency/high frequency point source. (Drivers are 3/4†tweeter, 5†midrange, 10†woofer). The 8260A features an internal digital active crossover, accepting inputs from 32 to 192kHz. Total amplifier power is 390W per speaker. The Genelec 8240A is a two way active system which features a flow optimized reflex port that provides solid, clear and articulated low frequencies without compression, distortion or port noises. It is also combined with the Genelec Directivity Control Waveguide™ (DCW™), and has rounded edges and gently curved front and sides of the MDE™ (Minimum Diffraction Enclosure™) enclosure. (Drivers are 3/4†metal dome tweeter, 6.5†woofer). The 8240A also features an internal digital active crossover, accepting inputs from 32 to 192kHz. Total amplifier power is 180W per speaker. The Genelec Loudspeaker Manager™ (GLM™) software manages the Genelec DSP signal processing responsible for all loudspeaker functions, such as the crossover filters, driver equalizers, driver position alignment, room response alignment, calibration and equalization related filters as well as distance compensating delays. Carefully designed DSP crossover filters with extremely steep roll-off characteristics feed dedicated power amplifiers for each of the low distortion drivers. The Genelec Loudspeaker Manager (GLM™) control network and software features adjustment of levels, distance delays and flexible room response improvement equalization with the reliable and robust AutoCal™ automated calibration system via the GLM™ control network. We will also be featuring the M-Clock Plus AES Grade 1 Master Clock/Dual Sample Rate Converter from Drawmer (http://www.drawmer.c...r-clock-src.php). M-Clock Plus is a high stability master clock generator offering clock rates from 44.1 to 192kHz, coupled to two sample rate converters, which allow material to be re-sampled and synchronised to the selected high precision clock. In addition to the internal clocks, M-Clock Plus can sync to either external word clock or clocks from AES/EBU signals. Precision clock frequency measurement and display indicates the exact frequency of the selected clock, whether internal or external, to an accuracy of 2ppm. M-Clock Plus has an external word clock input and an AES11 input which retrieves the clock from an AES audio signal. Each sample rate converter has selectable AES, SPDIF or TOSLINK inputs, with simultaneous AES, SPDIF and TOSLINK outputs. This allows many possibilities for format conversion as well as sample rate conversion. Sample rate converter #2 has inputs on the front panel for easy access. Provides user selectable word length of 16 or 24 bits with automatic dither generation – particularly valuable for 16 bit word lengths at low signal levels. There are 10 word clock outputs - 8 at the rear and 2 at the front for easy access. Note: also of interest from Studio Connections Australia are Drawmer's HQ Precision Pre-amp / DAC and the Bricasti M1 DAC – http://www.bricasti.com/m1.html. Neither of these will be on display or available in our meeting however. Sources will be all digital this month, sorry no vinyl. Steven will be providing an Audio Alchemy DDS Pro/DTIPro32/DDEV3.0 CD transport, which has both AES/EBU and COAX outputs. We will also have an Oppo BDP-95 player for DVD-A and BluRay discs (provided by a member) for playing members and guests music. Playing SACD discs will be possible but less desirable due to the enforced DA conversion in the player – the signal must be then later reprocessed via ADC which means there is a lot of processing. For this meeting, both music sessions will be BYO after Steven’s demonstration session. Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all. So bring along your favourite music on CD, DVD-A and BluRay. 22. The January 2016 meeting of the Sydney Audio Club sees us once again gather for an afternoon of fine music, great sound and amicable company. As is usual for our January meeting, we will have a system comprised of club member components. But our meeting this year will be a bit different … we’ll have an Australian twist in celebration of Australia Day coming up. Bring any music composed by or performed by Australian artist/s. Most of our meeting will be BYO so we may be able to allow the playing of more than 1 track per person, depending on how much music everyone brings. Details of the system…. This method of playing discs was carried out in reverse of how the original master disc was actually cut in the first instance. The technology went back to basics and then improved upon it. The second arm ‘reads’ the tracks of the record, ’seeing’ the gaps in between. In this fashion it ‘knew’ just where one track ended and another one began. It also automatically sensed the size of the record being played and set the speed accordingly. Clever stuff indeed, especially for 1972, when the technology was being designed and developed!â€. Refer to http://beophile.com/?page_id=726 Cabling will be by Wireworld and Synergistic Research. Both the first and second halves of the music sessions will be our popular BYO. 24. The May 2015 meeting of the Sydney Audio Club sees us once again at Dence Park for an afternoon of fine music, great sound and amicable company. For our May meeting we have the core system of a dedicated and long-time club member. Over the years he has built up an enviable system primarily based on Dynaudio and Plinius equipment. It’s a dynamic, immediate and impressive sounding system. Details of the system… Marantz SA-11S1 CD/SACD player – Refer to http://www.marantz.asia/ap/pages/home.aspx and http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue28/marantz_sa11.htm Plinius M8 preamp – Refer to http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/plinius3/1.html Plinius SA-250 Mk4 power amp – Refer to http://www.pliniusaudio.com/Plinius_Range/Power_Amplifiers/SA_Reference.html and http://www.stereophile.com/solidpoweramps/506plinius/index.html. OCOS speaker cables, Nordost Blue Heaven Interconnects – I believe Dynaudio still use OCOS cables internally in its speakers. OCOS cables lend an extremely clear and fast sound. The second half of the music sessions will be our popular BYO. Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all. So bring along your favourite music on CD/SACD. Sorry, no provision for vinyl or flash drives this month. Guests are always welcome – we are a very friendly club so you don't need to know anyone to join us for an afternoon of fine music and sound. We will welcome you at the door.
