  1. Hi All, Well I have received my brand new Topaz KT120 from Earle and I am a very happy man, for the price I think it is outstanding value and I am a little surprised there isn't more discussion on here about them, but I digress. I have a DIY sub using an SDX15 driver and up till now I was using a spare amp that I owned that puts out 500 watts, bridged into 4 ohms. Earle was kind enough to install a pre-out to run the sub but it requires my amp to have an input impedance over 47K. I have found that mine is lower than this so I am looking for some advice. As I have just bought the Topaz my budget is extremely tight can anyone offer any options I could consider? One more question and it maybe a stupid one, could I just run the minidsp before the Topaz altogether and continue to use my current amp for the sub? Thanks Darren
  2. Looking for a Subwoofer to fill out the bottom end a little. Currently considering Rel R328 vs SVS PB13 Ultra vs Rythmik F12 SE (price - I max out at $2K, but I'm very happy for less!) It will be connected into a WLM Sonata tube amp and supporting WLM Diva monitors. My usage is 70% music. The sub will have to take high-level inputs as I don't have a dedicated sub out or pre-out so I think this eliminates the SVS PB13 Ultra. I've had an offer of a demo of the Ryhtmik F12, but I have no comparison or ability to have both it and the Rel R328 in the same room. I do like that both of them should integrate well for Home Theatre, but prioritise music. Looking for suggestions or comparisons as I have no idea on subs other than they should integrate well.
  3. Hi all, A while ago I got a new sub and I used REW to help with the set up of my miniDSP which I was using as a cross over and all was well. Recently I received my new amp and as such I need to work with REW again to integrate it with the sub. The problem I have is the Tascam US-144 I bought of eBay has an intermittent fault which drives me crazy so I need a replacement. I am considering the Xenyx 502 as I am looking for the cheapest option but this doesn't look to have USB out put. I have also seen the Xenyn Q502 which for a little more does look to have USB out. When I was using the Tascam it controlled both output and input. That is to say I ran the signal out through the Tascam to the amp with RCA's. I then ran the mic signal through the Tascam to the PC. I am trying to get me head around how I would do this with the Xenyx Q502? Can I use my current set up DAC etc to run the signal out and the Xenyx to handle the input of the mic side? Will this cause issues as I am using one USB and device for output and another USB and device for input? Or does the Xenyx have an output that I can run to the amp? If anyone is familiar with this setup can you point me in the right direction? Also if you have any thoughts on a cheaper option please let me know. P.S. The USB mics are not an option due to the length of cable I would need. Thanks
  4. Howdy all, Happy New Year! I thought I'd start a little side topic based on my movie watching over the Christmas break. I bought a nice little sub as self-given present, and then went on a... somewhat excessive (according to my better half) quest to find some material (mostly movies) that would test it out.. along with the other speakers in my home theatre. Now, you'd think in this age, that there are many fine movies that test out a subwoofer. But boy was I struggling a bit to find something that really "reaches deep", for more than a few moments, a scene, or even at all! So I "went to the all-high oracle of knowledge (google) for other people's suggestions. Many people suggested movies far too numerous to mention here. But after taking some of their advice, I'll outline what I watched: Jurassic Park is a classic, for the stomping of the T-Rex... ok, that has it's bassy moments. Star Wars.... (anything really) but a special mention goes to Ep II for the seismic charges. (The first thing I tested the sub on). U571 (Old now, but good atmospherics). House of Flying Daggers. (The drum scene is pretty good for bass, pity about the story). Pacific Rim... yes, there's some VERY nice bass here. Master & Commander. (I only have the DVD, but the cannons certainly have some punch to them). Thor I & II (Yep those are good ones) The Avengers... Good Bass. Lots of crunch. Captain America I & II. Some nice bass in all that.. but nothing really seems to stand out in my mind. Super 8.... yes... that was a train crashing in my home.... To my neighbourhood.... I'm sorry the sound disturbed you, but truth be told, I'm not sorry I did it! :~) Brave... I know, I was shocked too! Great atmospherics for the overall sound system too! Lord of the Rings trilogy... with special mention of the battle scenes in the Two Towers, and Return of the King. Good bass with the War Oliphants (Elephants) collapsing, and the catapaulted rocks. Letters from Iwo Jima. As far as the sounds of warfare can be considered "Nice". The Dark Knight... that's a fair whack of bass! The Matrix movies have some nice moments, especially with the EMP pulse and many fight scenes. Tropic Thunder (Please forgive my watching of Ben Stiller) but the explosion in the beginning is very cool. The latest Star Trek movies. Aside from the sound being great, I just couldn't help but think back to "Heroes" and muse "Why Sylar, your ears have grown so pointy!". However, for SHEER DEPTH, DURATION, AND IMPACT.... MY PERSONAL WINNER IS: The latest (2014) reboot of the Godzilla movie. A 12" sub is good... a 15" or bigger would be better! (Or multiple subs for a noticeable improvement). There's so much bass! Power plants collapsing, planes crashing, giant creatures fighting like Pacific Rim, but a bit bassier (yes, I know I didn't think that was possible) Go watch it, with the sound cranked, and you'll understand why! I'd love to hear what movies get your fillings rattled out! Also, what movies do you think has the most immersive sound? Love to hear your thoughts! Hamish.
