Hi Guys, Recently I was getting a pair of my SET monoblocks repaired and upgraded. The hifi shop loaned me a pair of push pull monoblocks while they were working on mine. While they didn't have the same incredible highs and mids they starkly reminded me of how good and controlled the bass is with a push pull design. It got me thinking and I wonder if there is anything around like this: Some sort of cross-over before the amplification stage which distributes mids and highs to a SET and the bass to a push-pull unit. Could even take the crossover out of your speakers and place them between the preamp and power amps (stereo SET and PP or 4 monoblocks or stereo containing both SET and PP) and run the speakers naked? I know volume matching would be an issue but could probably attenuate the push pull unit. Anyone aware of anything around like this? Rob

These things were made by Luxman just after the Alpine takeover, but I will wager that they were planned beforehand by Mr Miura. There's naff-all info about them on the web, but such as there is suggests that 250 pairs of monoblocks were made in 1984-85, retailing in Japan only at the then astronomical price of 1.1 million yen the pair, employing WE 300B tubes "specially selected for Lux Corporation". Everything about the way they are put together indicates unhurried quality. 30 years later they look like this on the outside, i.e. a bit dusty: Inside, they are like this: - apart from fragments of broken 300B, clean as a whistle. Luxman eccentricity being what it is, removal of the output tubes means removal of the wire cage. To do that, it's necessary to go in from below, where two screws (at 2 o'clock and 8 o'clock to the tube base upper left) tie the whole cage assembly to the top plate. To my eye they look better without them. And even without the right tubes, they do sound good ...

Last Sunday I had a visit from the proprietor of a small family owned business located on the Mornington Peninsula who had this in the back of his car: As I write I hear Leon Russell's piano, Carl Radle's bass and Jim Keltner's drumming with a wholeosity and righteousness that I have never heard before save in my dreams. 18 easeful and proper watts of single ended gooditude on the left side, and the same on the other. Proper bass - not Disneyvision bass, proper bass as comes from musical instruments. Rich, detailed without obtrusiveness. Space everywhere without disintegration. Grip and punch like real music. It is love. The end of the road for me. One to grow old-er with. This is what is inside. It is work of which Mr Miura (he of the beautiful Luxman MB-300) would be proud. ( I hope the photographer doesn't mind me lifting this pic.) We are lucky to have among us someone who can create such magical things, although he is too modest to believe himself a magician: apparently it's all in the iron. And I am lucky to have it to listen to.

Apologies if this have been discussed before. I'm building a system for my son's room and looking for your recommendations for an amplifier. I'm keen to move away from SS, hoping to get your opinion on a bang-for-buck/budget amplifier Requirements Near field listening for a small room. Full range open baffle using Visaton B200 96db sensitivity 6ohm nominal impedance Some kind of bass augmentation at a later date Amplifier budget is <$400 Few things on my shortlist are: 1. Topping TP-60 - TA2022 chipset 50wpc ~ $210 delivered 2. Miniwatt N3 - Single Ended EL84 - 12AX7 3.5wpc ~ $220 delivered 3. Stick with vintage SS (Old Sansui, Marantz, Pioneer, Luxman) Anyone with experiences comparing the sound of class T tripath and cheap tube amps?

Hi All, I am hoping to get some crowd suggestions for high quality custom SE OPT transformer winding services either in Oz or overseas. I have an upcoming project for which I will require several pairs of single tap amorphous core OPT that are impedance matched to both the amplifier and the individual drivers (including the limited frequency range of each driver - so they will not be full bandwidth transformers). Immediately I thought of Tribute in the Netherlands but he is currently shutting down DIY support as a way of partial retirement I guess. There is Sowter in the UK. Any other ideas? Cheers, Anthony

Further information: For sale is an Oswalds Mill Audio Parallex PL519 amplifier, come with separate power supply in 110v. The chassis is solid dove tail jointed Philadelphia walnut with specially cut slate top. using PL519, a television sweep tube, in ‘screen’ mode as OMA described it, the tube is being used in triode mode. A low powered tube amp best suited to high efficiency speakers 95 db plus, in particular horns. OMA’s description on their website: https://oswaldsmillaudio.com/parallax OMA is renown for the design and beautiful workmanship. There aren’t many reviews online because Johnathon of OMA do not like audio reviews. There are some info on YouTube about OMA. The sound of their horn system is jaw dropping. The sound is natural, open and musical. The current retail price for this amp I believe is about $30,000USD, more than $40,000AUD! OMA never publish their prices. They have put their prices up massively in the last ten years. I was told by OMA that their phono stage (ex pre) alone is now 30,000 plus USD. I am happy to accept reasonable offers. I am merely trying to recoup some of the cost. I bought mine from a US dealer of OMA a few years back. I also have the phono pre but that’s not for sale. A pair of RSD PL519 will be included as well as a pair of rare Telefunken PL519. This is an earlier version of the amp without the built in volume control. Further Information: There are 300B SET amps and then there are 300B SET amps. For those that know Cliff from Audio Synergy this is one of his final evolution of SET amps. It is a two box design. One purely for the power supply and one dedicated to signal, they are joined by umbilical cables at the rear. The signal side has a pair of 12AU7 signal tubes feeding a pair of 6L6 driver tubes before a pair of 300B output tubes. The Power supply consists of two power transformers. The smaller is dedicated to the two 12AU7 signal tubes with the larger more robust handling the 6L6 pair and the 300B pair. Additionally each tube on the signal side gets its individual rectifier tube and choke. There is a lot of copper in the power supply. A pair of 6X4 for the 12AU7 pair. A pair of 5U4GB for the 6L6 pair. And finally the 5R4WGA pair for the 300B pair. What this combination gives you is a scale, dynamics and control over speakers rarely achieved using 300B tube designs. You will get 8 watts of SET goodness!! It will come with the tubes shown in situ and spare tubes for everything, which will consist of - 1 pair Tronal 300B 3 pairs 6L6 as per pics 1 pair Hewlett Packard NEC 12AU7 2 Pairs 6X4 as per pics 1 pair RCA 5U4GB 1 pair 5R4WGA I recently purchased a First Watt F8 with the intention of swapping the two amps in and out with my DeVore O96 Orangutan speakers. The reality is that is not happening, so am offering this beauty up for sale for someone to enjoy. If it does not sell at asking price I will happily keep it as it is wonderful. If you have the right speaker efficiency and impedance these are for you. I do not have any shipping boxes and these are heavy, particularly the power supply so local pick up only, sorry. Very happy to audition for you with my Orangutans. More pictures are available and happy to answer any questions via message. Since the previous listing, I have had the amp checked out and given a clean bill of health by our own @Ihearmusic , so the new owner can buy with confidence. Further Information: Very sad to see these go, they were to be my “end game” speakers and have kept me very happy for 10 years now. The goal was to build good looking speakers that could be driven to realistic levels by an 8W 300B SET amplifier. Clifford from Audio Synergy here in Perth designed these speakers. We built a prototype pair and it took him a further 3 months to fine tune the sound. The two way was built first, the woofers added later, hence different finish. The cabinets for the two way pair were built and the components installed by Karri Acoustics. The woofer pair cabinets were built by a professional cabinetmaker. Two Way: Cabinets 500 w 850 h 300 d Stands 200 h total height 1050mm. The stands are included in the sale, (they cost me $800- to get made) powder coated steel construction and filled with garnet sand. Very heavy and stable!! Can be used without the woofers, has three ports to the bottom refer pic. Constructed using 25mm HDF board with real wood Karri veneer. Drivers- OEM Tang Band W8-1808 8" Neodymium Full Range Driver with wizzer come removed. RAAL 70-10D RAAL Ribbon Tweeter with Amorphous Core Current replacement of these drivers is $1,648- USD + shipping + duties The 8” runs full range with no crossover while the Raal is crossed at 10.5K with a high-quality cap. Frequency range approx. 50Hz to 30KHz and beyond. Sensitivity approx. 96dB 2.83V/1M Min impedance min 8 Ohm The Woofers: Cabinets 500 w 520 d 600 h Constructed using 18mm Russian Birch ply with 36mm for front baffle. Inside of the cabinets are lined with 3mm copper plate. The external finish is Min Wax. Drivers are Crites (Emminence) CW1526F Steel Frame Woofer – Pair 100 dB/2.83V/1M Current replacement of drivers is $660- USD + shipping + duties Crossover is external as per pics (one inductor) and rolls off at 220 Hz. You can piggyback off the other speakers or run another speaker cable from same amp. In room these go down to about 30 Hz The four cabinets alone have cost me $4,000- and still present as new. These very tube friendly, low power friendly speakers produce an incredibly dynamic, realistic and full sound. Amps beyond 50 Watts probably not suited to these speakers. I am offering these as a package so you can get the full bandwidth but I may split subject to negotiation. The woofers would suit someone looking to build a horn system as the crossovers can be changed very easily. Prefer local sale so you can demo with your amp and make sure you are happy. No shipping boxes are available, and these are each very heavy, for any interstate interest, I am prepared to deliver to pack and send at your risk and for your organization. Speakers like these do not come up very often. These are incredible for the asking price and I am sure a demo will convince you and help you get the best out of your SET or even First Watt type amp. I have had to spend substantially more than this asking price to "potentially" better these. The pricing is firm. Happy to answer any questions by PM and happy to demo with my 300B SET or bring your own amp.

* Item full name and model etc. Weston Acoustics 300B Time Machine * Location: Ascot Vale, Victoria (prefer not to ship at this stage) * Item condition description 8/10. This amp has been lovingly cared for but I have listed it as 8/10 as it had a split in the timber that ran along the grain line at the back of the amp. Earle was kind enough to repair the split. He reinforced the area internally, cleaned up the split and treated it with wax to make it look like grain. If you look at the first pic you will see it doesn't look as bad as it sounds. This split occurred when I first bought the amp and got it home. I have my gear up high away from the kids & as I lifted it to put on my shelf I must have not supported the weight of the transformers properly. Needless to say I was not happy. As you can see from the other pics besides that the amp is in great condition and works flawlessly. As I have stated above this amp comes from a loving home, it has never been abused and I have treated it with the respect it deserves. I wont rattle on about how this amp performs as everyone on SNA already knows what it can do. Also if you have never seen one of Earles amp's in the flesh be prepared for a pleasant surprise, they look far better in real life. * Price and price conditions $1700 * Reason for selling: I recently bought another, cheaper amp. I justified this to the boss by suggesting I would down grade and put the money towards other boring things. To be honest I don't want to sell it now but I am under significant pressure to stick to our deal. If I can't get my price I will tell her it's not worth selling cheaper and it will be a win win situation . * Payment Methods: Paypal, Cash - Pickup. * Extra Info: This amp recently had a trip to Earles to get pre in and outs fitted so I could run a sub. As such there are only two inputs as shown in the pics. He was also kind enough to change a couple of thingies internally, but I have no idea what they were, (maybe flux capacitors ) It comes with Sylvanian 6SN7, EH 300B tubes and a Mullard 5AR4 rectifier (not shown in pics). If you want any more pictures or have any questions please let me know. * Pictures

Further Information: I am selling my highly-regarded Line Magnetic 518iA integrated amplifier (22W; 845 valves) because I am going triode flea power (Decware) with high-sensitivity speakers (Tektons). As well, it’s getting harder for me to lift 35kg when I wish to. I'm wanting to sell this high-end mint condition Chinese amp to someone who knows what they're buying—so I'm giving plenty of details, and offering it at a bargain price. I’m including all the original (almost new) Line Magnetic tubes except the rectifier. As a bonus, it comes with the upgraded PSVane 845 T1 matched pair; the TAD KT66 matched pair, plus a Shuguang 350B pair; and the lovely Genalex Gold Line rectifier U-77. All these premium tubes have less than 500 hours’ use. I bought it new from distributor Bill McLean some 4 years ago—a factory-authorised premium model configured specifically for the Aussie market (especially the transformers) and certified electrically, of course. It is very solidly made and has never missed a beat. I have the original (double) box, volume remote and Manual. “Everyone knows I love the Line Magnetic LM-518iA for how it pumps out spirited, transparent energy. It makes sopranos sound true of tone and forcefully poetic. Its 845 triode tubes give vivid light and natural life to every kind of music.” (Herb Reichert: see also https://www.stereophile.com/content/line-magnetic-audio-lm-518ia-integrated-amplifier). There are many such rave reviews online about this amp—and I concur. I am foremost a lover of tone and timbre, and the LM delivers big time. I've used it in rotation with three other amps, averaging around 5-10 hours a month. Yes, I know I have too many amps! My wife keeps telling me. The amp shines in any system [Herb Reichert again: “It has easily driven every speaker I have tried with it (in all Stereophile reviewing over a year).”] It can also be used as a power amp only, with the specific input—I mostly used it that way with my Leben preamplifier. It's a tube roller's dream: signal tubes [paired 12AX7 (substitute 5751/WE420A+adapter) and 6L6 family (sub. EL34/KT66/KT88/350B/7581A)] give the most significant results. It is very easy to check bias, which stays accurate afterwards (in my experience). Like most valve amps it sounds best after some 15+ minutes’ warm-up. In summary I can't fault this amp's sonic picture when married into my chosen system. It's a very relaxing, clear and atmospheric sound, full of life and allure; giving everything that fosters blissful listening to all kinds of music. I traded my 300B SET amp and my VTL 300W mono 6550 pentode amps (and my 1.7 Magnepans) to get here—I thought it was the end-game amp for me. Never say never! My Tekton speakers are voiced—ideally—for much lower-powered amps, so the journey continues. I dealt with some occasional mild transformer 'buzzing' by running everything through a Holton DC blocker and a Thor PS-10 power station (for voltage control). Turns out the problem was actually in a street transformer operated by Ausgrid. The IR remote control (just for volume; only when the amp is used as an integrated) works best when you hold it sideways...could be a Chinese thing? The tube cage has safeguarded the hot tubes in my lounge room from young kids very effectively. Just as well, tubes are expensive... Local pickup preferred. Insured shipping (including proper handling) within Oz is $270-$350 approximately. General Information (from the Chinese Manual) This superb item is fully handcrafted in finest point to point wiring, works as an integrated amplifier Single Ended Pure Class A Triode design with output 2x 22 W on tubes 845 in final stages. It features: Input groups 3x Line; 1x Pre Amp; Output Groups 4, 8, 18 Ω. In pre-amp stage: 2x 12AX7 input tubes for voltage amplification, 2x 6P3P (6L6) driver tubes, 1x 5AR4 rectifier tube. External BIAS adjustment facility with precision potentiometers and voltmeter control; external Hum Balance Calibration for sound adjustment; special handmade low magnetic leakage toroidal potted power transformer; special handmade wide frequency response EI potted audio transformers. Full traditional point to point wiring, hand-soldered. High quality Japanese ALPS motorized volume control; German N-cap coupling capacitors and other Audio grade components; soft start delay function 30 sec for turn on / off / mute; IR remote control; Removable metallic tube protection cage; Detachable IEC power cord system. Net weight: 35kg Two Reviews (for lovers of reviews) 1. https://wallofsound.ca/audioreviews/line-magnetic-518iA-integrated-amplifier/ “The Line Magnetic 518iA is a world-class amplifier for under $5,000. It has power and drive far above and beyond its rated specs. I have never turned the volume dial past 11, and usually 9 o’clock suffices to rock the house. Sometimes you can have it all—tube warmth, golden tone, 3D imaging, with PrAT and solid state drive. The Line Magnetic 518iA earns a Wall of Sound Gold Star Award. This is a keeper.” 2. https://witchdoctor.co.nz/index.php/2014/06/line-magnetic-LM 518iA-integrated-set-amplifier-review/ “...‘natural’ is definitely the best word I can use to describe the 518iA...the Line Magnetic brought music to life and took my senses and emotions on a colourful and thrilling journey, miles from the usual day-to-day trials of life.”

Hi, I'm the soon to be owner of a pair of Hoyt Bedford speakers. The Traformatic Aries was design especially to match these speakers - 'the Aries integrated began life as a custom commission. Unlike the two others, this time the client wasn't a private music lover but hifi distributor. He'd read a review about how the Kaivalyas came into being. Now he was inspired to ask whether we could design for him a low-power amplifier which he would bundle with the Hoyt Bedford line of single-driver speakers he imports to Australia. Their sensitivity requires little power. Their value pricing asked for an equally affordable but quality amplifier. Thus was born the Trafomatic Audio Aries. a challenge made to the manufacturer by Tony form Audio Addiction.' If anyone feels like parting ways with one, please let me know! M
