  1. Further information: Up for sale is a Nakamichi CA-5 pre-amplifier, and a matching PA-5 amplifier. Keen to sell these as a pair rather than separate them. These probably don't need much introduction - designed by Nelson Pass of Threshold, the amp using his STASIS technology. I have owned these for years, having purchased them from Tasmania, I think from the original owner given they were originally sold in Tasmania according to the stickers on the boxes. Due to a variety or reasons, they have been boxed and unused for about 7 years. Prior to that they were in daily use, doing a great job of driving my Quad 57’s. But I have to clear out some stuff, and these have not made the keepers' list unfortunately. I fired them up today, and wondered why I am not keeping them…. Anyway, from a physical perspective both are as close to new condition as I think you could get. See photos. Apologies there isn't a photo of the left side of the front of the pre. It's as good as the right, but when I went to upload the photos, discovered what I thought was a photo was a movie.... Don't feel like unpacking it again.... Both are in original boxes, with original packing. The amp is in a double box – the outer one is a bit tatty, but the inner one pristine. Both come with original manuals (about three pages each – generous calling them manuals really), a little discoloured, but nice to have. The amp is running perfectly. Nice room heater too, just as I remembered it…. The pre-amp has a little scratchiness in the balance pot, but no dead spots. Scratchiness may disappear with a bit of use. The volume pot seems fine. Beyond that, all seems fine. All inputs are working. Line level is sounding great. I don’t have an operating turntable at present, but using extremely low level output from my Astell & Kern player, I can confirm the phono inputs result in an output. I couldn’t get an idea of audio quality with the phono inputs (no RIAA, mismatched impedance etc.) , but I see no reason this should not be as good as this pre’s reputation. I used to use it with my turntable when it was set up, MC input. They haven't had any work done on them whilst they have been in my hands. They are boxed as stated, so in theory I could freight them. The amp is the concern - it is very heavy and I am concerned about it not surviving in an old box, even a double one. So I'm open to considering freighting them at a buyer's cost, but would much prefer to sell them to someone who can pick them up. So initially it is no freight. I'm not willing to spend lots of time doing auditions for tyre kickers, but for an intending buyer I can connect them up to establish that they work as described. Thanks for looking.
  2. Further Information: 2-head tape deck from the 1990s made in Japan. Am original owner, and you can see the box, having ordered it from Singapore that long ago. I was looking then for one of the 3 head units but I think? Nakamichi were winding down at that stage so this was the only unit available brand new that I could find. I got Into CDs and ended up not using this much at all. Maybe 30 hours tops in 30 years! Been in the box for most of those years. Box has manual. I never had the remote for this unit. Always kept the box in good and dry storage, haven't opened it in years. I plugged it in a few months ago, and you can see the display working. Can post at cost. No "in system" audition but you can bring a cassette tape with content and play the Nak and we can plug in headphones in the headphone socket (see front left) and you can test that way through the headphones.
  3. Recently came across this Beast recently for a bargain..... I think. I was just after peoples thoughts, experiences and opinions with Nakamichi products (In particularity this one), Rather than the tape decks we usually associate the name with. I believe this is a 80's / 90's product and it hasn't been used for about 7 years until yesterday. I have never bothered thinking about 'Caps Replacement jobs etc' on my other vintage gear. But considering the age and that this particular amp might be of some status and value, Would it be worth me spending some hard earned on a freshen up ? If anyone knows anything about the amp, please share. Nakamich PA-7II "Stasis" Inherently Stable/Uniform Amplifier 225+225W Made in Japan. Approx 30KG. Also have the CA-5II.
