Melbourne Audio Club monthly meeting - Bluesound - Not Your Average Wireless Multizone Audio 8pm Wednesday 21st October, visitors welcome. Willis Room, City of Whitehorse Offices Maroondah Highway (Whitehorse Road), Nunawading Melway Map 48 Ref G9 Contact: 9437 1249 The designers at NAD and PSB have come up with a brilliant solution to the problem of high-res, whole-house audio that combines superb sound reproduction with twenty-first century connectivity. With six models in the Bluesound Gen 2 line up, the brands products are a significant step-up from Sonos and Bose, with all models capable of 24-bit/192 kHz music decoding and playback. This month's meeting we will have Convoy, the distributors for Bluesound, demonstrating two of their products. The Power Node 2 ($1499) and Vault 2 ($1999) both units offer similar functionality. Streaming audio from computers and NAS drives, Internet Radio and cloud -streaming services such as Tidal. The Power Node 2 streamer/amplifier uses Direct Digital amplifier technology, developed by NAD, to deliver 60W per channel. Speakers can be connected directly to the unit to create a room 'zone', all controlled with your tablet or smartphone. The star of the Bluesound line up is the Vault 2, a CD ripper with 2TB of storage built in, with the ability to rip CDs in bit-perfect lossless FLAC without the need for a computer. It can search music from NAS drives or USB connected hard drives, as well as play back music to an existing Hi-Fi system via its stereo outputs or a coaxial digital out. With the Bluesound app and a tablet, you have the capability to add to your high-res music collection by downloading directly from Highresaudio Online Stores onto the Vaults hard drive. Convoy will put together a system comprising of B&W speakers, a pair of CM6 S2s and the matching 10 inch subwoofer. The Bluesound system will demonstrate how mature this form of audio has become - the wireless transmission of music was once viewed as a novelty - it is now possible to do music over Wi-Fi up to 24-bit/96kHz, better than CD. With the slogan 'Hi-Fi never went away, it just never went wireless' Bluesound will appeal to a new group of audiophiles, will that be you? So earlier this week I received delivery of a Luxman L-590AX. I plugged it in and started listening via my Apple TV ( => W4S Remedy Reclocker => Audio GD NFB 2.1)... then my ears started hurting with a sharpness in the treble. Thought, no worries, must be a bad recording, glad the Luxman has adjustments and tried the treble adjustment. Nup. I was thinking... oh no! This is an expensive mistake. Album after album was unpleasant to listen to... But then I put a CD into the Oppo BDP-93 (which follows the same path as the Apple TV) and then suddenly my world was right! Phew! Turns out even with a re-clocker cleaning up the Apple TV, it was making a mess of my music! I heard that it down samples most of the music before streaming, but not heard the reality of how it was changing the music until now. Turns out that my tube amp was just very forgiving I guess - tight bass, warm mid's, laid back highs. The Luxman across the board is very revealing! Has anyone else had this experience with an Apple TV (Gen 3 Revision A)? So now with the source of the issue diagnosed I started investigating alternatives. The decision was jump to the Auralic Aries, Sonore Rendu or even PS Audio Directstream with Bridge or go for something cheaper. Let's face it, I can't afford this kind of upgrade and I stumbled on the Bluesound Node. I was surprised to find it also supports Spotify Connect. I'm not sure why this unit hasn't got more airtime as it is excellent (I note a few people complain about the 90-100K cap on files).. A note in the box promised they are going to be releasing DSD support on top of the 24/192. Overall, I'm impressed. The treble now has more clairty, the sound is easier on the ears. I'm tempted to get another when I've got the money in order to create some multi-room audio. Pros of Bluesound Node: Optical out; Firmware Updates to offer improvements; 24/192 resolution; accepts a USB drive; iOS/Android/Windows/OS X apps; Spotify Connect; Hi-Res streaming like Tidal Cons: No DLNA support (yet); interesting form factor; not quite the detail resolution of Auralic Aries I'd highly recommend it for anyone looking for a budget streamer to play their music off a NAS or computer. I've not compared the analog out on the Bluesound Node, nor the sound before using the Remedy Reclocker... Maybe this is the perfect companion to a budget DAC?

I currently have a gen 1 Bluesound Node (connected to an old Synology NAS) and Fetch TV box. It's doing combined audio and video functions for the family in the living room. The combination is fairly user friendly for the family and does the job, but I'm considering getting a NUC with a built in 2TB HD (sync to the cloud), and a quality external DAC, to supersede them. My thoughts are: * to use Roon that would better integrate my music library with streaming services * reduce the overall space and wires associated with these boxes * Improve streaming sound quality over the Bluesound Node with a better DAC. I don't mind setting up the box but the end solution has to be at least as user friendly and stable as the current set-up, and offer the equivalent FTA TV recording and streaming capabilities (Netflix, Catchup TV, Stan etc) as the Fetch. So, my key question is ... Is a family friendly NUC with "Fetch" + "Roon" capabilities realistic? Or is it a pipe dream, or possible but a real pain in the neck? Plan B is just to use the NUC for Roon and keep the Fetch. (The Fetch box is not the most reliable thing in the world but at least it's user friendly). Thanks for your help!

Further information: Bought the Bluesound Node 2i in October 2020. Still in warranty. Like new condition. Being stuck at home in lockdown has given me lots of opportunities to think about changes and upgrades to my system. This is perfect, I probably should be keeping it with its ability to stream at such high fidelity, but there is always the question - what if I try this.... I'd love to keep it in addition to an upgrade, but the budget doesn't allow. It is the perfect addition to powered speakers or with a poweramp that takes a 12 volt trigger or just as a great streaming DAC. I use it as a digital preamp into some powered dynaudio floorstanders. After hours when the house is asleep, let it send your bluetooth headphones the sound. Versus the Node 2 it has airplay, a new DAC, better WiFi and delivers better quality audio. It will be in the original box with all original accessories. Will even include a little IR remote I used to control it. 5% of sale price will be donated to SNA Photos:
