Hi all, I already have a great 2 channel amp that has HT bypass. I’m looking for an AVR that has all the latest processing formats and preferably Dirac as an option, but is a lower spec amp as I don’t need the power. Essentially I’m after the cheapest AVR that can give me the best AV pre experience, and enough channels to do a 5.1 setup. Was looking at the new Sony, But it doesn’t have pre outs Marantz Cinema 70 is one option. It doesn’t have Dirac - I’d have to go to Cinema 50 for this, which adds to the cost. Open to suggestions.

Powerhouse Denon AVR. Made in Japan. Great condition (see pics) - with one of the two original remotes. No original box or manual (available online). Been used most recently for stereo setup (running Krix Lyrix Gold floorstanders). This unit has the power to happily run a demanding stereo setup or ideal for surround audio in that second or third system.... Seven discrete amps each rated at 130W into 8 ohms (around 170w in stereo mode). You can tell the serious amp section by the unit's 18 kg weight. Huge range of inputs and outputs including HDMI (1.3a) to 1080p. Plenty of reviews and specs for the 3808 and 3808CI (which is the custom installer version). Sorry if this has been asked before. I couldn't find anything on the search. My question is, if I plug an analog source (phono stage) into analog inputs on an AVR and have it run as a 2.1 system, would the signal path include any ADDA conversion? My receiver tells me its analog (sounds very good), but I have a salesman telling me that no AVR ever can maintain a true analog signal path. His argument is if I can change the crossover point, then its obviously going through the DSP converter and into the digital domain. My argument is, a crossover point can be changed very easily without physically turning a knob (electronic means) hence not pushing through any converters. Looking at my signal path diagram of my AVR, sure at one point the signal reaches crossroad where it can go to the AD, but it also can bypass the conversion straight to amplification. I've probably answered my own question, but the sales guy was very knowledgable and has me second guessing. Thanks in advance.

Hi all, My local hifi store is offering me a pretty good package deal, but I'm having trouble making a decision between receivers. Wondering what everyone's thoughts were? For reference, the 5.1 speaker setup I'm looking at is: Towers: Kef Q950 Centre: Kef Q250C Surrounds: Kef Q150 Sub: Kef KUBE 10 Biggest disadvantage I'm seeing is that the 505 cannot adjust crossover frequencies for individual speakers, but I'm honestly wondering if that is such a big deal (as I've never had a proper 5.1 setup before so will be learning when it comes to calibrating the speakers). There seems to be some strong opinions against Pioneer AVR in general, whilst the Denon is a crowd favourite. But what has me stumped is how much the store person raved about the Pioneer and strongly suggested it, especially with the extra power. Plus Dirac Live seems to be a solid plus for the Pioneer. So yeah, anyone out there with a similar speaker setup as me? What AVR did you go with? Cheers!
