  1. I ended up purchasing an Opus 3 (Low) for $250! At that price I couldn’t say no. I get the Grado Humm on the Kenwood, so I set it up on the Denon, only it’s not tracking as well as the AT33PTG/II. I know the AT is microline whilst the Grado is elliptical, but still, my Denon DL-160 tracked better than this
  2. Hello All So I currently have a DL-160 on my KP-1100 which is kinda on its way out, and I’m looking at new carts to replace it with. carts I’ve had in the past are att440mla, dl-110, dl-103r, Shure Mx97e, clearaudio concept v2 (which I hated) and currently running an AT33PTG/III on my Denon dp47f turntable. I’m looking 2 carts at the moment, both very different from each other. First is the Grado Opus 3, which has favourable reviews, but it carries an elliptical stylus, and as soon I see that, I think IGD, which I hate and can hear a mile away. I’ve never used any Grado products before and I’m keen to try something different, but I don’t want IGD, so I’m a bit hesitant. The other is Ortofon’s Quintet Black. I’ve got an iPhono3 Black Label so preamp is not a problem. Again, great reviews, carries a Shibata stylus, and as a bonus, there is video of it on YT playing the Telarc 1812 LP which is a bastard to track, something I haven’t been able to do successfully yet. what I can’t understand, is how some high(er) end carts that are $1000+ are running an elliptical stylus when microline / microridge tracks way better than elliptical ever could. Yet people still buy them. Denon love to obfuscate the exact profile of their styli for the 103 (most say it’s conical, some say elliptical) and yet (I think) the 103’s are fantastic. How is it that they track and sound the way they do with the stylus they have? Is there something inherent with Conical/Elliptical styli that MR/ML can’t match or beat? there’s only a couple of dealbreakers for me when it comes to carts, has to track like a champ - no igd and no harsh mids and highs. And if it’s forgiving of poorer recordings that would be a bonus. I know it would be easier to get a vm540ml and be done with it, but I listen to many genres, from metal, to jazz, to punk, to classical. So I’m trying to step out of the box, hence why I’m looking at Grado and Ortofon. Any opinions and recommendations would be great appreciated. Hi-Fi is a hobby where I feel cant ever stop learning something new.
  3. Further Information: After much deliberation I’ve decided to let got of my Rega RP6 Turntable. It’s about 2-3 Years old and I’ve barely used it in the last 6-8 months. Runs perfectly. Complete with TTPSU, original accessories and original box. Red Anchromat and upgraded Rega Reference Belt is also included. The Ania Pro cart has had about 300-350 hours use as a best guesstimate. I’ve always kept a cloth over the dust cover so there is very minimal dust cover scuffs. It really is in exceptional condition. Would prefer pickup but happy to ship as I do have the original boxes. Will have to work out costs though depending on location.
  4. Further Information: I know this cart gets great reviews, and I sunk about 5-8 hours into it (definitely not over 10 hours) but it’s just not agreeing with my PX-2 and my ears. I know that these carts take 30-50 hours to break in, but the more I research, the more I find this cart is not a good match for the tonearm on my PX-2
  5. Item: Sony XL-70 Cartridge Price Range: dependant on condition Item Condition: New or Used Extra Info: if anyone has one of these carts for sale please let me know
  6. Item: Marantz PM 94 Integrated Amplifier Price Range: Fair price for both of us Item Condition: New or Used Extra Info: Although importing these amps from Japan is easily doable, I really would prefer to pick one up locally or at least within Australia. I’ve been wanting one of these amps for at least 10 years now. Hoping to own one before I carck it Please don't forget to report your post as FOUND when possible. 7. Yes im well aware of Keith and his trial program. I live in the western Suburbs as well and will be hitting him up for a cartidge setup regardless of which way i go, as my eyes arent what they used to be.
  8. yes I have looked at the Mp500 and the Hana Carts. How was the 20x2L with igd? what were the mids like? how did it cope with poorer recordings? as some of the stuff i listen to isnt recorded the best.
  9. Hi Everyone So im looking to buy a new cart and a phono stage if need be. Problem is I'm not 100% sure on the Cart/tonearm matching thing and its driving me mad. My System TT: Kenwood KP-1100 (which I believe has a medium mass tonearm) Amplifier: Pioneer A-70DA (Phono Stage specs: MM 2.8mv/50kΩ, MC 0.24mv/100Ω) Carts I've had in the past: at440mla, dl103r, dl110, Mx97e, (Currently running a denon dl160) I loved the tracking on the at440mla as i can hear IGD a mile away, but it was lean on bass and a bit bright. My ears cant take to harsh mids either, they make me wanna tunr off the music all together. So if a cart has scooped mids then i can deal with that. Overall I like Denon's sound signature, but they dont track as well at the at440mla due to the stylus profile i imagine, and I know i wasnt running the dl103r at the right loading and most likely with a mismatched arm. I primarly listen to metal/rock, but do listen to a lot of other genres, 80s pop and so on, and also Jazz and Classical. And the Jazz/Classical LPs i do have i listen to regularly. So I'm after an all rounder. I dont expect to find a perfect cart that will bring out the best in every genre, so i expect compromises will need to made which is fine. I just cant compromise on IGD. If i could wave the magic wand, I'd want something that tracks like the at440mla, but has the sound signature of the dl103r or dl160. After looking at many carts ive kinda narrowed it down to the 2M Black, at33sa and the dynavector DV-20X2 Phono stage wise i like what the Parasound Zphono XRM has to offer (also has Balanced XLR which i can use with the A-70DA) Trying to stay within a $2500 budget if i can But of course, I am open to any idea or recommendation that comes my way. Happy to stick to MM if need be or go MC. I'm not loyal to any brand, i just want the best sound i can get for my budget. So please, all comments are welcome. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  10. Does this unit come with its original remote? Is it region modded?
  11. Hello Does anyone know how to adjust the auto lift of the Kenwood KP-9010? On most 12" it wont lift up at the end but it will on every 7" I play, so im sure it just needs a slight adjustment. Problem is I cant find a service manual for this TT so I;m hoping someone out there knows how to make this minor adjustment ?
  12. Hi Everyone Whilst I have my Yamaha Px-2 on the back burner as it needs a little attention, I'm using my Pioneer PL-516X turntable as the main. I absolutely hate IGD and ordinarily, can spot it a mile away. However, lately (at least to my ears) I can't seem to get rid of it. That carts I have are Denon DL-103R (many hours, heavy headshell) Denon DL-110 (many hours, light headshell) Denon DL-160 (hardly used, probably around 50-60 hours, light headshell) Audio Technica AT440MLA (many hours, medium weight headshell) PL-516 Tonearm Specs Tonearm: static balance type, pipe arm (s-shaped) (from what I've read, it is believed to be a medium mass tonearm as Pioneer hasn't specified its mass) Effective length: 221mm Overhang: 15.5mm Usable cartridge weight: 4 to 10g Given the DL-160 has the least amount of hours, that's the cart I prefer to work with most at the moment. But I just can seem to get any of these carts sounding good..ie IGD free I've been using paper protractors using Stevenson, and because I've developed a slight dip in my eye sight recently, I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong. So I was looking at better ways to align the cartridge, and came across the Dr. Feickert Alignment Protractor NG ($410) and the AnalogMagik All In One Cartridge SetUp ($1250). The nerd in me wants the AnalogMagik as I can monitor frequencies and fine tune the alignment accordingly, but its more that 3 times the price of Dr. Feickert Alignment Protractor. Does anyone here have experience with the Feickert protractor? Does it make it a lot easier and accurate than using paper protractors? Also am I using the correct headshells with my carts? Are there other ways of aligning the cartridge that I may have overlooked? If anyone can give me any advice it would be much appreciated.
  13. I have a Yamaha PX-2 which needs a little attention. But yeah, gotta love tangential turntables.
  14. Hello Everyone I have a Yamaha M-50 amp that is 120 watts per channel into 8Ω, but the Jamo speakers I have are 6Ω. Will I run into problems if I use these speakers on this amp or must I get some 8Ω speakers instead?
  15. Hi just here go see if I can find a good stereo amp. I have a pioneer A-449 which isnt sounding all that great to me anymore ?
