Top shelf stuff Alan. Always a great read. Those grills are off the hook. Congratulations and I look forward to checking them out in the flesh.

Bloody marvellous sums it up perfectly. It was a 50/50 call to go onken or A5. Alan was keen to have a stab at the horn flares and I had a feeling he was going to hit it out of the park. So I took one for the team. Big thanks to the master craftsman for taking a classic Altec design and respectfully notching it up to 11. Thanks also to the rest of the Altec / large format guys for all the help along the way.

Further Information: For sale is pair of Altec Valencia 846B in excellent condition. Cabinets were restored in 2020 by @Powerglide and are in excellent condition. Link to post detailing the work below. In addition to the restoration of the cabinets the speakers have had substantial work done as follows; - The alnico 416-8a woofers have been re-gaussed and re-coned using GPA cones to new condition. - The Altec N800-8k crossovers have been revitalised using Jantzen's "ultimate" audio inductor, the Wax-Coil is Jantzens top of the line Foil inductor for the bass. The coil is wound from 99.99% pure copper foil on a hardwood core. Jantzen air core coil is used for the HF. - Capacitors are the excellent Russian paper-in-oil, foil hybrids, bypassed with Russian teflon caps. - Altec 30904 Attenuator / Equaliser installed to crossover. This is the same filter network as used in several different Altec builds such as the model 19 and the 9849-8A studio monitor. Essentially a mid frequency attenuator it is a key ingredient in taking Altecs to the next level. - I have settled on the alnico 806-8a compression driver as the most suited to this cabinet. It has a far smoother frequency response to the later ferrite types in my opinion. Diaphragms are USA made not the readily available Chinese types.. - All drivers are perfectly matched. With the generosity and advice of the Altec luminati here on SNA these speakers are as dialled in as a pair of Valencias can be and thanks to @Powerglide present in fantastic condition. Sensitivity is 97.5db so a perfect match for SET and low power systems. I have used speakers with tube and low power SS class A amps and all the midrange magic is there. Speakers load the room with ease, sound is fast and transparent with plenty of slam. A great example of speakers with a legendary pedigree.

Threshold S/200 power amplifier in flawless condition. Very rare black finish. Stock power supply caps have been replaced as shown with stock caps still in-situ. Internals are very clean. The attention to detail, components, layout, circuit and design that made the Threshold amplifiers of this era so good is clearly evident both inside and out. Runs perfectly. Fantastic amplifier from Nelson Pass.

Although not based on an exhaustive list I would say the ST bottle shifted square plate ladder type. The one I have in the 4.1SE at the moment is a Z&I branded 6X5G. I have also tried a straight bottle Mullard EZ35 ladder type and a Mullard 6X5GT CV574 brown base I picked up here from @dwbasement. I have attached a photo from the listing as I have never come across another one.

The options are extensive even with the good oil from @xlr8or. Fitting is a factor for me also. I also have the rectifier hard up against the power transformer with the big bottles touching. I plan on posting when I have done some further evaluation against my Abbas 4.1SE but I changed out the E182CC for a tung-sol 5687 in a recently acquired Abbas 2.3SE (thanks @DrMikeOz). Curious on the selection of the E182CC as the 5687 is clearly an improvement in my opinion.

Many thanks @xlr8or. Once again I appreciate the advice. Good to have some direction. Presumably the earlier production 80 tubes from the usual suspects would be the go. With an adapter like this https://www.ebay.com/itm/255905773561?hash=item3b952c37f9:g:B7gAAOSw1uJhwiRy&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAAoMEEkV%2BnBDz6KPSUzXOaGrM1YcHmdpYhQvLRfhLl4vucCqTYC%2FbBQQt881aEzIYBLJ%2FJHmoTyO3R3vmeH79K057VjDyP%2BBgRAO%2B4sWYagO2LFdMMs7tSqAfQckWo4GzJpNjVTcnf0KhAeksq0nsdm3U4ZyFdzgP8MlpYxeQFnDM4AGTfpukohFB7vyKDYAoGsV74DUl6EMltBYdFv7qwKGk%3D|tkp%3ABk9SR6q3rui6YQ Out of curiosity as far the ST shape goes is there any standard to sizing /shape. Having a look at the big bottles I have the size and shape varies a lot. For example would GEC production rectifiers from a period use same bottle / glass.

I am working my way through the restoration of a recently acquired 301. I have all number of parts coming / arrived from the UK. I think I have most at hand...Anyway I am hoping someone can steer me to a local supplier for replacement rivets to the bottom idler assembly. Best I can tell I will have to remove the bottom plate to get the bearing out. I know they are available from Perfect Sound in the UK as part of the bearing replacement kit. I have the replacement bearings from Classic Turntable Co that have been supplied without the rivets. Appreciate any advice. Cheers, Matt- 235 replies

EXPIRED Fender 1964 Blonde Bassman

Finally got around to taking some more up to date photos. Thought some of the members here maybe interested in a closer look at this amp. -

Further Information: 1964 Fender Bassman. Posting this here before I cast the net further. Amp is in very good original condition. It was purchased (2nd hand) in person by myself in Eugene OR and imported. As far as collectable fender amps go this has to be one of the more expensive to ship here. It was converted to 240v (Mercury Magnetics tone clone FBLNDB-P/240) in 2016 by Ivan Richards. Filter caps replaced at the the same time with Sprague Atoms. I still have the original power transformer and the old Astron caps. Otherwise the circuit (6G6B) is original and includes the original output transformer. It has new production Tung Sol 6L6GC output tubes with the rest a mix of NOS RCAs. The speakers are the original oxford 12M6. I have the original cover for the head but not the cabinet. I will supply a later issue fender cover for the cabinet. I have posted photos I have at hand but the intention is to get a full photo gallery together for sale on other platforms in the near future when time permits. Very rare amplifier to find at present with a few heads around but far as I can tell there are no 6G6Bs head / speaker combos for sale at all. The grill cloth on the speaker cabinet could do with a wash but otherwise the tolex is in very good condition for an amp pushing 60. Not a problem to set the amp up for potential owners and let it speak for itself. Price is firm and includes donation to SNA.
