  1. The HD800S (and HD800) are know for their massive soundstage, and detailed (and what some may describe as lean) sound. The HD6XX/650 have a small soundstage, are warm, and has a thicker sound. As great as the HD800(S) are (and they are one of my favorites), they are not what I would consider to be a direct upgrade to the HD6XX/650. In other words, if you are looking to get more HD6XX/650 greatness, the HD800/S are not it.
  2. Things have taken an interesting turn, and I have found a pair of B&W 805S within my budget. Thank you very much everyone again for your suggestions. 🙂
  3. Looking to upgrade my desktop speakers. Budget of under $1500, but may be able to stretch up to $2000 if something is really worthwhile. Current setup: AMP: Plinius 2100i Speakers: Celestion MP1 Subwoofer: Wharfedale Power Cube 12+ Recently had the opportunity to try out some Kef LS50's I really liked the detail and resolution of the LS50, but it sounds a bit too forceful, as though the sound was being pushed into my face. It's also slightly too big (in terms of width & depth) for my desk. Since I have an amp and a sub, I am only looking at passive speakers. I am a low volume listener with a very strong preference for detailed and analytical sound. Looking for suggestions for compact speakers that I should look into or avoid. Currently in my list: Quad S-1 (and to a lesser extent Quad S-2) Elac Debut Reference DBR62 SMSL Tabebuia Wharfedale Evo 4.1 Sonus Faber Lumina 1

  9. For now, nothing has really changed. USB-C is just the plug/connector. For the purpose of audio (i.e. USB2.0) it works exactly the same as USB-A/B/Mini/Micro, etc... Higher transfer rates/modes are (in general) not used for audio applications. Without getting into the cable debate. Typical things that people look for in a cable/connectors: Wire gauge: USB-C cables usually has thinner conductors. (it needs to fit more wires into a thinner cable, especially if you have a USB3 or thunderbolt cable) Conductor material: Same materials can be use for both types of cables Contact area between connectors: USB-C has smaller contact pins compared to USB-A/B Durability: USB-C connectors has been around for a while without widespread reports about durability issues Shielding: Both can/should be shielded Potentially, due to the higher spec requirements of usb-c, they are constructed to be less susceptible to interference.
  10. For something different, if you haven't tried electrostatic before, there's the Koss ESP950 which is just within your budget:https://addictedtoaudio.com.au/products/koss-esp950-electrostatic-headphone-system Audio Technica (the open-back AD series) has quite nice treble. Based on the preferences described, the HD800 (or HD800S) may also be worth a try.
  11. I've used (and continue to use) a few of these devices. Passive (USB power filters/isolators): Fiio LA-UA1: Noticeable difference only on noise power sources, otherwise no significant audible difference. This is a more of a problem fixer. Intona USB2.0 Isolator (Industrial): Noticeable small difference in all use cases. Tbh, this is the level of "difference" that I have experienced from replacing a USB cable. Active (Reclockers): Holo Audio Titanis (800mA): Noticeable difference, things sound a bit more defined and sharper. iFi USB iPurifier: Noticeable difference in more areas. I've also used a few USB DDC's: Audio GD, Singxer, Mutec. In all cases, the improvements from DDC's were magnitudes over USB decrapifiers (e.g. 1 - 5% difference vs 5 - 15% difference). I would consider DDC as having a much better bang for buck if it fits your use case.

  15. I think they are worth trying. I have a few pairs. They are good budget options and have decent build quality. Personally, I used them as backup IEMs to carry around. There are a lot of reviews and comparisons around the internet, just pick the one that closer resembles the sound you prefer at the price point you are looking at. They're not the only budget brand around, but they have been around for are while and quite popular.
