  1. Another milestone moment last night...the first permanent external panels are screwed onto an amplifier...have a look... Six SET channels = six ammeters to show the B+ current of the power tube. These are not strictly necessary but they sure are convenient compared to putting in test points and measuring current with a multimeter. I will make up some custom faceplates for them so that it is easy to identify the channel I am adjusting. The five LED lights are for the various stages of power-up of the amplifier based on the status of the power supply box. These amps w

  2. The Resonance Ensemble: Head Above Water/Feet Out Of The Fire A fabulous 2 disc release by the great Ken Vandermark and stellar ensemble. Disc 1 is a studio release recorded early 2012, with disc 2 being a live effort recorded later that year. This release reminds me somewhat of the Angle 9 ensemble. Brilliant muscular and energetic jazz. Magnus Broo – trumpet (Stockholm) Michael Zerang – drums (Chicago) Ken Vandermark – tenor saxophone, Bb clarinet (Chicago) Mikolaj Trzaska – alto saxophone, bass clarinet (Gdansk) Devin Hoff – bass (Chicago)

  3. Marty Marty Marty! The 8x12s are crossed at 80hz with the mid bass drivers. The travel down flat to about 15hz, but I do have them boosted a couple of db these days. So which part of them is technically not a sub? Well other than they are not in a separate box.

  6. Christmas is at home this year and my wife has asked me to tidy up some mess (she calls it mess but I call it works-in-progress) for the event so today I have ordered the remainder of the steel for the Bass Cannons. Getting more stuff so you can clean up the other stuff sounds like man-logic, and it is, but the idea is to see if I can get it all drilled and tapped and welded and powdercoated and perhaps even installed before the family turns up at Christmas. That would be something! So, the Bass-Cannons are go! I've not thought of anything better in the meantime so I am going to

  7. Oh dear, not sure to make of the 8x12" subs that are part of my 2channel system. i don't think anyone has described my audio reproduction as macho bogun before . Nor has it ever been described as rubbery boomy crap. But as you say in your experience , perhaps one needs to get out and get some better experiences. After all your poor experiences should not be a blanket rule for those wanting better.

  8. It seems ironic that as marriage is dwindling in popularity amongst heteros, that gays look like getting it. I don't think gays necessarily want to be married as much as they want the same rights, such as inheritance and legal power on behalf of their partner...etc. Seems reasonable to me, the law needs to fix situations like the following story, you may have already heard. Gay couple living together for decades, eventually (I can't remember how) one arrives at being terminal, unresponsive, on a machine. The law insisted his partner was not authorized to direct medical staff to tur

  9. Use a sub don't put the volume up to high if can hear it on it's own you did it wrong , with one sub you should do the crawl test . This is is a head hurting topic and if enjoying music is this hard I would give up now. Deanos advice is as simple as it gets and having just spent a weekend tweaking my twin Rel subs probably bang on the money and exactly what I found. No eq for my 2 channel and have integrated two subs much better than I thought they would but in my opinion it's all about the subs I purchased and thier capabilities. Would the eq bof

Australian pianist Joe Allen teams up with drummer John Guerin (Buddy de Franco, George Shearing, Monk) and bassist Eugene Wright (Basie, Ammons, Stitt, de Franco, Tjader, Brubeck) in what was a dream come true for him. Quite melodious with some great musicianship displayed by all collaborators.

  18. @Satanica Fair enough....but they are SGR sub's that are actually perfectly matched to the mains. In SGR I trust. In others who say, "just get a sub for extra bass", I am suss....it seems an easy fix that often doesn't deliver any improvement and sometimes, actually degrades the listening experience. If they said, "Go to a speaker/acoustics expert who can perfectly match a sub with your existing system so you get actual sound improvement, not just 'more bass' ", I would take that on board.

  25. Come on guys - putting in effort to optimise a system with measurement and DSP does not mean you dont enjoy music. In fact many of us find it quite the opposite. Equally I understand people find it too complicated and cant be bothered with it. Bass in any typical household environment will have issues. Some use room treatment or DSP or both to correct. You dont have to do any of that, or you can try and see if it makes a difference. Rustee, as you have allready committed to measuring gear, and use computer audio as a source, it is easy for you to try DSP. Gene

  30. Most welcome mate. Lizz has her roots in Jazz (well that's how I discovered her) with the release Salt. I'm probably considered an old fart but having only been into vinyl for 2 years, it's not because I already had the records. I think the pressings are just done properly in this genre. Perhaps less commercial (mainstream), so they need to be - perhaps.. but I'm pleased that they are taken under the wing of Music Matters and Analogue Production. I've been drawn to a fair amount of jazz because of the Sq in the first instance. And then clicked with the vibe of the music. No

  32. Hi All I will get right to it - my USB only GROB simply blows away the Direct Stream. That's right - a 2.3k or so DAC takes out, and make no mistake about it, the difference is not subtle, the much much more expensive Direct Stream with the latest software etc (I think its about $8k or so here in Aus). Here are the details. The system was: 1. An old Macbook running an old version of Audirvana and my little Windows machine running HQPlayer up-sampled to DXD. HQplayer easily bested Audirvana - but I have to emphasize this was a very old version running

  35. @aussievintage , I read @Simonon post's above and thought similarly to you but with a slightly different slant. The matter of DBT should not be taboo. I appreciate that DBT has its place for some. I am some body who is not overly interested in DBT to support my perceptions of system changes. In fact I have never done it. I do wonder how many SNA members do it. Nevertheless I do respect that to some people the DBT is fundamental to their assessments of the benefits of their system changes and comparison of various products. To me some of the reports of DBT results are bizarre and n

  36. And again I would agree. It's not that conventional speakers don't have a good response at this bandwidth, but it's more that in this application we want a little more output in that region. Tone (Bass) controls / EQ could be used, but then you're likely going to find the limitations of the driver very quickly. Adding a sub however allows more output in this region by a driver designed with the capability (cone excursion) to do so.

  40. Yeah, unfortunately that price seemed a bit too good to be true. I've just been 'trying' to get my head around the advanced calibration options available on this TV as I've been finding them. I haven't really dug deep into these options until a few hours ago.....Mind Blowing wouldn't be far from the truth. I've found that if you select picture type to Custom, it opens up the advanced picture controls, then if you set adaptive backlight to Min, and both ambient sensor and contrast to OFF, you then get the option to select gamma to bt.1886, which is the newest gamma
