Speakers for the fronts

Recommended Posts

G'day all,

My wife and I are building our home. I have a dedicated theatre room, 4.2 x 3.3m (smallish theatre)

I have a onkyo 646

Centre speaker from Adelaide speakers 452 with a ribbon tweeter

Custom made transmission line subwoofer 12" SB with a redgum amplifier

2 paradigm surrounds bookshelf speakers

I'm planning to utlize the atmos feature buy having in ceiling speakers.

My question is what front speakers would people recommend for around $1500?

Thanks very much

Hi Josh,

I'm no expert myself but from what I've been reading almost everyone recommending a timbre match between center and front speakers otherwise human's voice in particular will not sound the same as the dialogue shifts from left to center to right, etc.

I think if you want to keep your center speaker then you're better off getting Adelaide speaker brand for front speakers that has matching ribbon tweeter or even another brand with ribbon tweeter.

First thing you can do though is to use your paradigm speakers (i'm assuming they're using metal/soft dome tweeter) as front speakers and put some movies with lots of dialogues and see if you notice any difference, if not then good for you and just get any speakers within your price range.

I had kenwood floorstander that use linaeum (ribbon) tweeter and they're too soft/warm to my liking

Now I got KEF iQ3 (metal dome tweeter) with Energy EC-100 center (soft dome tweeter) and I can still tell the difference if I pay attention to it, otherwise not a biggie

PS: you probably won't get much response with this sort of questions around here as from what I observe most people here are stereo purist  :P

EDIT: Look at Classifieds section, plenty of speakers for sale in Melbourne area within your price range.

Get a stand mount from Adelaide to match the centre, easy!

As I have learned the hard way, floor-standers in a HT setup are a waste.... unless you also want to integrate an awesome 2ch system. You crossover a HT setup at around 80htz, so why bother with added $$$ of a floor-stander?

Great advice guys, I havent thought of using the bookshelf speakers. Im leaning towards maybe one day of having a 2 channel setup, down the track. But ill try the paradigms first. Im not sure what drivers they are but I know they were made in Canada and 18 years old. :s still sound good though.
