Further Information

Hi Everyone,

I'm in the process of assisting a close friend liquidate a vast majority of his Hi Fi equipment as he is transitioning into Aged Care Centre shortly and unfortunately cannot take the majority of his equipment with him to the centre.  We are currently in the process of cleaning out his apartment and have not come across any paperwork for the purchase of this item but considering it was purchased over 37yrs ago I highly doubt I we will find the original receipt. That said, the original packing carton is still in reasonable shape after all these years still has an adhesive label with handwritten notation of the Hi Fi Store’s name and address for what that’s worth.

My friend tells me he recalls purchasing this item new from David Neilen of  Sound Design in Petrie Tce Brisbane that became Caxton St Audio and is now known as Caxton Audio around 1987. We still have the original OEM shipping carton and styrofoam inserts to be able to pack and send this integrated amplifier. Having been bought and purchased in 1987 means this an Audiolab amp that was designed and built in England well before TAG McLaren bought the company and subsequently decades later, IAG purchasing the brand.

I have rated the condition of this integrated amplifier as GOOD instead of Very GOOD as it has some minor marks on the top metal case work which could have been from another component being stacked on top of it during it’s time.

My friend originally used this amplifier on a regular basis up until about 2019 to power a pair of Infinity RS5b 3 way monitor speakers. He bought a demo amp to replace it as an upgrade in 2019 and the Audiolab 8000A ended up being stored in a cupboard until earlier this week when I pulled it out and gave it a clean/wipe of the case and a blow out of the internals with a can of compressed air. I’ve visually inspected the capacitors on the circuit board and cannot see any signs of bulging/swelling or fluid leaks. Surprisingly, there is also no hum/hiss when the unit is powered up and working.

I have tested this well reviewed and renown amplifier with a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 10.1 speakers for over 3hrs of continuous listening from low to moderate volumes using the CD inputs and it has worked without missing a beat or getting hot in a dining room that currently measures 28c. I was also able to test the headphone amp section via the 6.3mm socket with a pair of Sennheiser HD800 headphones for 15 mins and it worked as expected.  I currently don’t have a turntable on hand to test the phono stage, but pressing the switch at the rear panel to switch between MM and MC settings does result in the front LED indicator changing from one setting to the other.
