Further Information

Hoping someone out there in the community can help me rebuild my Noteperfect Maestro speakers.

Well, my slightly modified version of them, with Dynaudio D-21/2 tweeters fitted instead of the usual Morel tweeters.

When I took ownership of these, both speakers had only 1x of the 2x tweeters fitted, leaving a hole where the 2nd tweeter should be.

As a stop-gap I have capped the holes with some MDF, but am looking to do away with this and replace with the actual tweeters to complete the speakers.

Note that there is a recessed cutout in the cabinet, sized specifically for the D-21 (110mm OD, 100mm mounting hole dia, 2mm thick flange) - hence finding a drop-in replacement is proving tricky.

Ideally a Dynaudio D-21/2 to match the tweeter that is there, but D-21 AF would also do, or open to other options with the same footprint.

I should also add - ideally they are functional, but even if they are old/defective, I would still be very interested (better a dead tweeter than the MDF panel)

Tantalisingly there are a pair of D-21 AF's on sale via Subito, but I'm unable to register with an Australian mobile number.

So if anyone has some old D-21's kicking around, or access to Subito, please let me know!

Thanks,

Simon

I gather Mike Kontor has started manufacturing the Noteperfect speakers again.

Might be worth seeing if he has a suitable tweeter?

His website has his contact details.

Thanks for the reply - I just contacted Mike. Yes I think he's manufacturing them again, but no he doesn't have a suitable tweeter.

He did point at the cabinet is designed to suit a different tweeter though (Morel one with a similar 110mm diameter) - so I may look to order some of them. Not the cheapest option, and a bit of a slippery slope as it would then mean changing out some crossover components as well to suit, but definitely an option.

I have a pair of VIFA D19TD-05-08 in storage which are 8 Ohm and have a similar appearance, but they are only 94mm outer diameter.

The Dayton DC28F-8 is also a soft dome (silk) tweeter and is 110mm outer diameter.  It's also 8 Ohm, very similar efficiency to the D21 and looks similar, so could be a drop-in replacement, or very close to it.

They're very respectable drivers and won't break the bank.  The flange is 4mm, but that shouldn't bother you if you only look at it from the front. 😄

Had a quick look at options from SB Acoustics, but they're predominantly 4 Ohm &/or the wrong size &/or very different appearance.

Thanks - that Dayton driver does look good, the kicker is around the 4mm thick flange unfortunately. I should have mentioned, but along with adding the tweeter, I'd also like to add a felt cover which sits over the drivers (as per the original Maestro design), and so it'd be ideal to have a ~2-2.5mm flange so it sits flush in the cabinet and the felt can go smoothly over top. Adding the felt being to improve the sound, as per Mike's suggestion. In saying that, sound-wise it might not actually matter if the tweeter (and therefore the felt around it) sits a bit proud. Not sure. I'll get Mike's thoughts on that one. Thanks for digging.

There are some Morel options out there too, some not that cheap, and some even more not that cheap. So for what it's worth, the other ideas I'm bouncing between are dropping the D21's altogether and splurging on higher end Morels, or just making a new capping piece to sit flush. Will give it a bit longer to make that decision, as well as just evaluating the sound with the single D21 as-is.
