Further Information

Who wants an amplifier?  Or, at least, who wants to try one out?

The story.

Rich Audio System Montreal Div. Inc. transistor stereo power amplifier.

I got this amp from someone who did not want it.  Unfortunately, I have no idea about the manufacturer, or, indeed, the person from whom I got it.  Intrigued? So am I.

You may have read that I asked on Stereonet if anyone could help with information about it, but no-one could.

With some caution I checked it out physically. I noted that it seemed home-made – “bespoke” as someone else described it.  The chassis is a combination of metal and, I think, MDF.  The connectors seem ordinary, and at least one of the binding posts does not unscrew, at least with the amount of force I was prepared to use.  So banana plugs are the go here.

It seems set up for 240v, with an Australian power cable.  The input circuit is an integrated circuit (so I’m told).  Also there seems to be a lack of paste between the transistors and the plate on which they sit.

I attached it to my system, using my Primare i30 integrated amplifier as a pre-amplifier.  Nothing blew up.  No strange sounds.  Nothing untoward.  So I let it warm up a little.  The rear heatsink did not get more than warm – probably even less than warm.  And then I started playing music.

And music was what I got.  It sounded better than the Primare alone.  Instruments sounded more realistic, and well set out and I lost nothing by way of soundstage.  I haven’t used it a lot but on each occasion I very much enjoyed it.

You may also have read that I asked about anyone who could put this amp in a decent chassis, with decent connections, along with doing an electrical check-up.  That didn’t work out.

“Why aren’t you keeping it?” I hear you say.  A combination of life and family reasons.  Unfortunately it has to go.  I am loath to send it to the recycling depot.  I think it deserves a decent home and, if possible, a decent chassis etc..

I anyone local is interested in an in-home audition, then be my guest.  If anyone wants to undertake the work to make this thing look better, then great.  I am even happy to deliver it within a reasonable distance from Noranda.

Proviso –  the person – or persons – must be well-known and –reputed here on Stereonet, and not requiring a long drive (on my part) or shipping (unless they are happy to pay a fortune for my time and effort).

I have included a few photo’s, and have more available.

If you have read this far, thank you.  If you are interested, please let me know.

E.& O.E.

I've sent you a Pm with request for the amp. Hope I'm not too late.

I'm across in Kingsley and would love to pick it up as an excuse to have a listen to your system at the same time if that's OK.
