DPS 3

It sounds paradoxical: The DPS was created from the enthusiasm of an analog fan for a CD player. For Willibald Bauer, the D-1 from Ayre Acoustics was the first digital source that offered the certain something in addition to principle-related advantages - above all absolute pitch stability.

Thus, the Munich sound tinkerer asked himself whether he could not build a turntable that combines the best of both worlds. Because he knows the weaknesses of the LP technology very well, he was able to respond specifically to them during the development. Accordingly, the DPS 3 not only sounds as natural and lively as you know it from top-class turntables, but also neutral and stable.

Strong drive
At the center of the concept is the drive. Due to the dynamics of music, the friction fluctuates during the scanning process, which impairs the sunctuation. Developers often try to counter this problem with heavy turntables.

Willibald Bauer, on the other hand, uses a light, low-resonance acrylic plate and combines it with a stiff bearing. Thus, the motor has to transfer a comparatively large amount of power to overcome the bearing friction: figuratively speaking, it always pulls on the plate, instead of the sluggish plate temporarily pulling on the engine, so that jitter is reduced to an absolute minimum. The result is extraordinary pitch stability.

Stable foundation
The high-torque synchronous motor of the DPS 3 already runs more evenly and quietly due to the higher load, which represents the heavy-running bearing. The use of a third phase in the motor control ensures even more silence, which is noticeable in terms of an absolutely stable foundation.

Since the motor is not mounted on the frame, but on the aluminium base, virtually no vibrations are transmitted to the pickup. The frame itself consists of several layers of MDF, heavy foil and cork, which also dampen the airborne sound very effectively.

The frame rests on three homogeneously foamed polymer elements, which not only dampen, but also have spring properties and the drive below approx. Decouple 20 Hz from the underground. An advantage of the polymer elements is that - unlike feathers - they do not have self-resonance. The recordings for the elements are height-adjustable and make it possible to balance the turntable.

Clear lines
You hardly have to say a word about the timeless design of the DPS 3: Thanks to its clear lines and proportions, it has long been one of the modern classics. We offer it in four versions; special versions are available on request.

The acrylic plate serves as a standard mounting base for the single-point tonearm developed by Willibald Bauer. On request, it can be pre-drilled for another tonearm.

Bob Marley or John Zorn?

In addition to the materials and construction, the meticulousness, with which we check and adjust every DPS 3 for tolerances, is also part of the concept behind our most successful product. Ultimately, however, you should not worry about technology, but only about which plate will be on the plate next.

Stereophile Review by Art Dudley
The DPS was also, as far as I could tell, the most completely uncoloured turntable I’ve heard. Similarly, it was among the most spatially amazing source components I’ve had in my home: Playing stereo records, its ability to suggest depth and the precise layering and positioning of voices and instruments was almost revelatory.
