Further Information

For sale: Magnepan 1.7 speakers upgraded with premium Mundorf Gold in oil and Evo oil capacitors, meticulously matching the original specifications. These upgrades have dramatically enhanced their sound quality, delivering heightened transparency and clarity. Initially planning to create an external crossover box, I found the speakers' transformed sound so captivating after precise point-to-point soldering of the capacitors that further modifications became unnecessary. Additionally, I replaced the stock binding posts with high-quality gold-plated pure copper posts from Hificollective in the UK, a $120 AUD investment.

The modified Magnepan 1.7 speakers are renowned for their transparent sound signature and captivating mid-range, characteristic of panels and Magnepans. I enjoy listening to dynamic soundtracks by Hans Zimmer such as Dune2, The Last Samurai, and Batman, jazz  as well as Yo-Yo Ma concerts. The modified 1.7s excel in presenting this genre music with expansive scale, deep soundstage, and remarkable musicality, making them a gateway to exceptional performances.

To truly appreciate how capable these speakers are, I recommend a personal audition.

Upstream I have a DCS network bridge as a streamers into a Lampizator DAC and Audionote M2 preamp and 40w EL34 monoblocks driving the Maggies.  I have also used a Fosi V3 to good effect for more casual listening.

Additional Note: I invested $700 in capacitor parts purchased from Soundlabs Melbourne to ensure the highest quality components for this upgrade. Having auditioned many conventional box speakers in the $10,000 to $25,000 range, I find that they cannot match the scale and transparency presented by these panels. Where these competing speakers excel and beat the maggies is in lower and mid-bass quantity and tightness.

For all potential buyers - I have no affiliation with the seller but owned Maggies for over 25 years; with their upgraded XO components and spkr wire connectors, these 1.7s will be an outstanding buy.

And re. the seller's comment "Where competing speakers (and more expensive box spkrs) excel and beat the Maggies is in lower and mid-bass quantity and tightness" ... if you pair these 1.7s with a high-current ss amp, you will experience a lot more bass than 40w of tube power is able to deliver.

No affiliation either...

I ran my i.7s with a lot of current after months of experimentation. I wanted to have valve power driving them but couldn't afford the esoteric prices of suitable models (I believe my old relatively affordable VTL 300W monos would have done the job, however). Some say the speaker you are dealing with is more like an 85dB sensitivity + 4 ohms; I could get great sound at a low level with a valve amp BUT couldn't comfortable 'drive' the 1.7s to any degree...it was too much to ask.

Like you I upgraded capacitors to Mundorf.

One fine day I hooked up the Wyred4Sound 1000W stereo amplifier (listenable Class D) and there was no looking back! I could scarcely comprehend the huge improvements in the sonics--particularly the bass. Now the 1.7s were getting up and dancing. Is there a better affordable speaker for vocals, chamber jazz/classical or percussion?

Adding 2 equalised REL Storm 5 subs into the mix solved some minor bass issues in my room.

I had a Leben valve preamp and you have the Audionote valve preamp. This to me is the unbeatable pre + power combo for Maggies.

[I see as well you have solid stands as part of the package. Very good.]

If not for being seduced by certain flea-powered amplifiers I would be listening to them still.

I fell in love with Maggies when I listened to some IIIas in the early 90s.  These were at Mike Kontor's shop and were driven by a large VTL amp (he was a VTL dealer, as well as Magnepan).

Then when he decided to jump ship and become an Apogee dealer ... I bought those same IIIas!  (Couldn't afford the VTL amp, though.)

i love my maggie 1.7. i don't really know what speakers i can replace it with at that price range. I ran it with a rel t7i sub hopefully with t9x later. perfect synergy.

i can push it right to the side wall as i have a small room but 1 1/2 mtr from the back wall.

Great imaging and soundstage.  midrange is its strenght. Any bad recorded songs are listenable with this tall beauty.

also great as a front surround speaker as the sound envelops you during an action  movie or concert video.

with regards to amp partnering, maybe an amp with high damping factor would do.

I used to have an old musical fidelity p270 , boy the maggie 1.7 can really sing and dance with those high current.

If you want to improve the sound you get - then adding some braced stands (like the OP has) will take them up a notch or two!
