The Amplifier Story

“The D240 stereo power amplifier represents a new milestone in amplifier design: it combines the musicality and life-like imaging of vacuum-tube and hybrid amplifiers with the maintenance-free convenience of all-solid-state circuit technology. The D240's one-button operation couldn't be simpler - one push and you're ready to play. There's no question about it- the D240 will change the way you think about solid-state amplifiers. It is musical technology on a personal note, designed and engineered to fit the way you live with music. Not surprisingly, all this is brought to you by the company with over 20 years of proven leadership and lasting value in music reproduction: Audio Research.”

The Service

In 2022, I sent one of these units back to my engineer in Philadelphia for full service. He replaced the power supply module.

The Upgrades

Both units received the full EMI RFI reduction treatment from David at the Upgrade Company. The power cable was upgraded with a Furutech Rhodium plug, detailed below. This has created a noise-free musical power amplifier.

The Inclusions

I have one 5000W 240/120V Transformer. That's x10 more watts than needed, which is well above the recommended x2–3 watts when using a transformer.

The amp comes with a high-grade power cable (built-in) with Furutech NCF high-end performance IEC Rhodium connector (£399GBP / $766AUD). You can plug these two sets into the transformer and an Australian wall plug and rock on immediately.

The Sound

It is clear, powerful, and very musical because of the full range frequency response, see the specs below. One powered my PMC MB2SE producing deep bass punchy mids and solid, clear highs. The other powered my large-scale horns with twin 12" woofers. They is simply a perfect amplifier because of its neutrality and musicality. Feed it well and it will reward you with great music.

Why am I selling?

I’ve sold my PMC speakers, and Im using a different amp for my horns, I don’t need these amplifiers anymore.

I have Audio Research' original packaging for one amp and a strong double box for the other. They will be safely packed.

See my feedback for the level of service and care I provide.
