Further Information

Convergent Audio Technology SL1 Renaissance Tube PreAmplifier. Line Stage Only.

Excellent condition.

This is among the finest if not the finest ever built preamplifier.

The SL1 has been manufactured since 1985 and it is still currently built. The current line stage model has a RRP of $30,000.

I purchased this unit new around 2012-2013 from Greg Osborn from Osborn Loudspeakers who used to be the Australian distributor for CAT.

Around two years ago I changed the tubes to the famous Telefunken E88CC and the Tesla E83CC (the direct replacement of the Telefunken E803S that are no longer available). All tubes were NOS purchased from jacmusic.com and brought significant improvement in the sound: more transparent with a wider and more dynamic sound stage, natural midrange.  The value of the tubes only is approx $1,200. The original tubes are still available.

The preamp is in perfect technical condition and excellent visual condition.

A review of my exact model is available on the following link from Stereophile: https://www.stereophile.com/tubepreamps/convergent_audio_technology_sl1_renaissance_preamplifier/index.html

These are rarely available for sale. I am selling as I want to upgrade to the current model.

Please don't ask whether it comes with a remote.

I prefer collection as it is very heavy: preamp and power supply weigh 24kg. Shipping via courier can be organised for $120 Australia wide.

What do you mean? It's a line stage only. Left side of the board is for the phono stage.

That’s not what I’m talking about, on the 4th photo with the three caps it looks like there’s a leak

There is no leak. It works perfectly. The board is made of a metal alloy so yes, this does oxidise in time. It's not a fibreglass board.

UPDATE:

I sent Ken Stevens, the designer of the preamp an email asking for his opinion considering the comments from @beark and @audiohifiaudio. I would not want to sell a less than perfect unit to anyone.

Until I receive an answer which I will publish here, the preamp is withdrawn/on hold. Happy to answer any questions in the interim.  If it requires repairs I will likely send it to the US for an upgrade to current model which I will keep.

UPDATE:

I have corresponded with Ken Stevens the owner and designer of the SL1 preamp. This is what he had to say:  "Those caps can't leak. They are film caps so they are dry." He also made the following comment: "The discoloration I see appears to be oxidation." He also commented that the Tesla E83CC are not the best tubes for the preamp and in one of their previous tests they found that the Philips Miniwatt ECC83 was better but he still prefers the tubes that are being fitted to the amp. Still discussing whether I'll have it upgraded to the current version but hasn't got back to me with a cost.

Hopefully that clears it. I'll update the description above if not no then once I repost it.
