Further Information

So: I have two of these, which is the only reason I'm selling this. I am trying to let go my grip of some gear and double ups and gear not currently in a system is what I'm moving on at the moment.

The A300r Precision is really fantastic amp with several line inputs and a very good MM phono stage. As many will know, these amps were available as a stock A300r and also as a 'Precision' version with mods/upgrades by British HIFI Guru Tom Evans.

I won't say much about Tom Evans here if you're unfamiliar just look him up.

Most people have heard about the often quoted Pioneer A400 'Giant Killer' amp or, if that feels like overkill, incredibly well regarded amp that still features on legendary amp lists. Pioneer's follow up model the A400X didn't beat the A400, but the A300r Precision took things a notch or three higher. I have the A300r Precision and the A400 (I also had the 400X which was still great in many respects-especially for the cost), so I've listened VERY carefully to all three.

This is not a put down for the A400, as this is available more cheaply and plentifully and is a great performer for it's price range.  I think some threads/reviews summed up my thoughts so you'll see below that my experience isn't unusual.

This amp exhibits clarity, 'precision' if you will, beautiful soundstage, great timing and tone with the bass, really nice treble and manages all that while being very 'musical'. It’s a really enjoyable listen. Those who know my tastes, know that I am generally a tubes man, and the A300r is the only solid state that I've kept in play ever since I've had it. My other one will continue to be in play. If you're after a lovely integrated, easy to navigate and listen to amp I really think this is a winner.

It presents really well, all pics taken today. A minor scratch on top and a few tiny scratches on edges commensurate with age. When I bought it, it arrived with a ding in the back plate (which, of course isn't visible when on hifi rack and has not affected usage) which I have tried to capture all this in photos , but you will see that it would still look very attractive featured in your set up. This amp has not skipped a beat-It's been a dream. They don't come up in Australia very often-I bought this from the UK, so I welcome one of you to enjoy it.

NB: I don’t have the original box but can post at buyer’s risk and expense.
I don’t have the volume remote but I believe aftermarket ones can be bought if required.

Recently upgraded my son's Pioneer A400 amp to a Pioneer A300R Precision (as modified by Tom Evans) .... after searching for one for many months

collected the amp earlier this week, and only connected it earlier this morning to do a comparitive test, as have sold the A400 to a mate who will collect it tommorow

The A400 is pretty good, and I have always suggested these to people who have a lower budget .... however, there is ahuge difference between the A300R and A400 ...

The soundstage is huge on the A300R and bass is much better and treble is crystal clear when compared to the A400 .... Soundstage is the biggest difference ... and has more detail

Description

Excellent minimalist hifi amp from Pioneer, modified by Tom Evans. The A-300R is the little brother of the A-400, one of the best-reviewed amps of the 1990s. Rated at 35 Watts / channel, the A-300R punches above its weight and… I’ll leave out the rest of the hifi reviewers’ cliches

The rare Precision version was developed for Pioneer by British audio guru Tim Evans. Modified to his designs they have a gold “Precision” badge on the front panel

The A-300R has an RIAA phono preamp input for use with a turntable – something not commonly seen in modern amps

“This is the best amp I’ve had yet regardless of cost. Don’t let the name “Pioneer” put you off. This amp is a classic audiophile bargain. It’s British designed and modified by electronics whiz Tom Evans”

“Well, this amazing amp is now 20 yrs old and still sounds fantastic, beats many modern amps costing far far more”

“Pace, timing, dynamics. Explicit Detail, great soundstaging. Neutral.”

“described by Hi-Fi Choice as an instant classic”

“As stated above, not all A300r units are Precision. Pioneer made the A300r units in their basic format and then Tom Evans’ Acoustic Precision company modded them for Pioneer. These are indicated by the gold Precision plaque on the fascia”
