Sennheiser announces a limited run of 750 special HD 800 S headphones.

June saw Sennheiser release a limited edition of its iconic HD 25, today the company has announced a special collector's edition of its HD800 S headphones – strictly limited to 750 units worldwide - a generous ten for each of its 75 years the company is marking.

The Anniversary Edition HD800 S (£1,399) sports a laser-engraved serial number and an exclusive matte gold colour yoke, decor ring and shell ring. Naturally, these select cans are handcrafted at Sennheiser's headquarters in Wedemark, Germany. The personal audio maestros use glass-fibre strengthened plastic so that the housing is both light and durable. The earpads cosset your lugs with a soft vegan velour material, while the grid and grilles have been crafted from a stainless-steel mesh.

What makes the HD800 S a head-fi fan's favourite is its vast frequency range of 4Hz to 51kHz thanks, no doubt, to the 56mm transducer being made of Sennheiser's patented duofol-transducer material. Additionally, this enables the company to be able to quote total harmonic distortion at less than 0.02%.

Furthermore, Sennheiser's innovative absorber technology avoids unwanted peaks in frequency response. It is said to mitigate the “masking effect” - where you're unable to perceive higher-pitched sounds that have low-volumes when significantly louder sounds in a lower frequency range occur.

Finally, the circum-aural earcups are also the result of meticulous attention to detail. The design, we are told, directs the sound waves to the ears at a slight angle to create a natural and spatial sound experience.

The Sennheiser HD800 S Anniversary Edition will be available from 22nd September for $2,599.95 RRP.

    applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
