Monitor Audio Platinum Series 3G Speakers Launched
Monitor Audio's Platinum 3G range borrows new tech first seen in the striking Concept 50 alongside other propriety improvements.
Monitor Audio invites the top-flight Platinum 3G speaker range to its 50th anniversary party alongside the Silver 100 Limited Edition and prototype Concept 50 speakers.
The new four-model Platinum 3G series includes the Platinum 300 3G flagship floorstander, the Platinum 200 3G mid-sized floorstander, the Platinum 100 3G standmount and the Platinum 250 3G centre-channel. The range can be configured as a two-channel hi-fi set-up or multi-channel home theatre system.
The Platinum Series 3G benefits from Monitor Audio's third generation Micro Pleated Diaphragm (MPD III) high-frequency transducer first featured in the Concept 50 prototype, making the new range the first speakers commercially available with this tech.
MPD III promises to reduce distortion and flatten the frequency response while improving the soundstage and sensitivity. This should all add up to a clearer, more consistent sound, so says the manufacturer.
Mid and bass drivers are also treated to super light, yet super strong, triple-bonded layer RDT III (Rigid Diaphragm Technology) cones. Monitor Audio boasts that the Nomex honeycombed core sandwiched between an ultra-thin and ultra-rigid C-CAM (CeramicCoated Aluminium) layer and a twin layer of uni-directional Carbon Fibre results in the lowest distortion of any speaker it's made so far. In addition, we are told that the Platinum 200 3G and Platinum 300 3G midrange drivers offer a smoother transition across the frequency range and a more consistent crossover with the MPD III tweeter.
That's not all. Monitor Audio's Dynamic Coupling Filter (DCF) promises to help control cone breakup. Thanks to larger and more powerful Neodymium magnets, a new motor system, and an underhung edge-wound voice coil, there is improved power handling. Furthermore, as the midrange driver enclosures are said to reduce internal standing waves, everything should be clearer as a result.
The bass drivers also receive large-diameter edge-wound underhung voice coils for exceptional power handling and allow for higher and more linear driver excursion.
The crossovers now use elliptical filters to improve the time alignment of the drive units at the crossover points, which impacts the sound's directivity, says Monitor Audio.
The centre channel speaker benefits from know-how learned creating Monitor Audio's THX-certified Cinergy Theatre series. Movie buffs should expect high levels of power handling and dynamics from the mid-range driver's carefully optimised motor system. Even though it only has a 2.5-inch diameter, the driver employs a very large voice-coil.
Finally, the all-new cabinets come in three finishes: Piano Ebony, Piano Black and Pure White Satin and they have apparently been engineered to improve the sound. To this end, you get curved front profiles to reduce diffraction, while tension rods secure the drivers to the cabinet, resulting in an inert and 'vibration-free' cabinet.
The Monitor Audio Platinum Series 3G will be available in Australia from December 2022, with local pricing being announced nearer the time.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
