McIntosh’s Future-Proofed MDA200 DAC Launched
Thanks to an upgradable DAC module, the MDA200 should remain timeless and decode your digital audio for many years to come.
McIntosh's MDA200 is the Binghamton brand's new upgradable DAC based on the company's established DA2 Digital Audio Module, which debuted in the C53 pre-amp and is featured in the Applause Award-winning flagship MA12000 Integrated Amplifier and C2700 pre-amplifier.
The MDA200 benefits from a next-generation, Quad Balanced, 8-channel, 32-bit digital-to-analogue converter, which, we're told, boasts enhanced dynamic range and improved total harmonic distortion.
You get seven digital audio inputs: two coaxial, two optical, one USB, one MCT (to pair with McIntosh's MCT series of SACD/CD Transports), plus an audio-only HDMI Audio Return Channel (ARC) to improve sound quality from TVs. Additionally, there are balanced and unbalanced analogue outputs, plus Roon Tested designation from Roon Labs.
As you would expect, hi-res audio playback is supported with the USB input providing native DSD playback up to DSD512 and DXD to 384 kHz, while the coax and optical inputs support up to 24-bit/192 kHz.
Of course, McIntosh's unmistakable design elements are featured, including an illuminated logo, rotary control knobs, custom machined aluminium end-caps and a black-glass faceplate.
Shipping is expected to begin in November 2022 in the United States and Canada, with the rest of the world catching up soon after. Local pricing has not yet been announced.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
