McIntosh launches the 43-driver XCS1.5K, touted as its "highest-performing centre speaker to date."

The XCS1.5K Center Channel Loudspeaker is designed to pair with McIntosh's XRT2.1K and XRT1.1K floorstanders. It tips the scales at 80.74kg and boasts 43 individual speaker drivers promising to dish out 1500 watts (the 1.5K in its name).

McIntosh describes the XCS1.5K as a hybrid three- and four-way design. The driver array comprises 25 19mm tweeters, 14 63.5mm aluminium cone midrange drivers and four 200mm "long-throw" carbon fibre bass drivers housed in a 43.66 cm x 126.92 cm x 53.9 cm (HxWxD) vented cabinet.

According to the Binghamton-based brand, combined with a detailed crossover design, this results in a more expansive sound field. Furthermore, the speaker has a selection of five preset angles to help you achieve optimal performance for your listening position.

Finishing touches include three sets of McIntosh Solid Cinch speaker binding posts for bi- or tri-wiring, a removable black-knit-cloth speaker grille and a finish achieved by no fewer than seven layers of high-gloss piano black paint.

You can now order the McIntosh XCS1.5K Center Channel Loudspeaker from authorised McIntosh dealers. The first units are due to hit the US and Canada in October 2022, followed by the rest of the world shortly after. It will sell in Australia for $74,995 RRP.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
