Following being awarded Best Sound in Show (Overall) by StereoNET judges at last year’s show, Hulgich Audio will continue to impress at the 2018 Melbourne International Hi-Fi Show with its two brand new models called the Nina and the Duke.

Both models were designed using Hulgich’s in-house technologies developed for all of its previous models such as LDBT (Low Diffraction Baffle Technology), CST (Coherent Sound Technology) and ICCT (Impedance Correction Circuit Technology).

The LDB technology ensures the new Nina and Duke have a smooth frequency response not just on axis, but also over a wide listening position. This evenness works in the horizontal and vertical planes.

Just like the previous models we’ve heard that seemed to disappear in our listening rooms, the company says the reason is ‘LDTB’.  What we heard was a non-fatiguing sound complimented by a huge sweet spot and a large soundstage.

Hear the Nina and the Duke at the show and listen for CST technology working its magic to create a coherent sound that seems to come from a single point source.

You’ll also hear a very refined sound and experience pinpoint imaging.

The Nina is an ultra high-end 2-way stand mount model that has an impressive frequency response of 37-23kHz, an impedance of 4-ohms and a sensitivity of 86 dB.

Founder, Nicolas Hulgich, says this speaker is named after the iconic singer, Nina Simone who knew how to sing jazz.

The Nina’s drivers comprise a 1.2-inch ring dome tweeter with a non-resonant diaphragm for minimum high-frequency break-up. The tweeter also features a two-part aluminium black faceplate with an integrated mechanical decoupling system and an optimised balanced compression dual chamber for superior dynamics.

The engine has a saturation controlled motor system with a T-shaped pole piece to provide very low distortion.

The mid-woofer chosen for the Nina has a vented aerodynamic cast aluminium chassis, proprietary cone material with Egyptian Papyrus fibres.  It uses a soft low damping rubber surround for an optimum transient response while an Advanced BIMAX spider improves linearity.

The previous flagship, Astor which StereoNET reviewed here, is a loudspeaker that will be hard to follow. Hulgich says he has accomplished this challenge, and the Duke is a model that surpasses the Astor.

After hearing what the Nina could do, Hulgich decided to use similar drivers for the Duke. The result is a speaker that’s totally neutral, has convincing dynamics and like the Nina, has a translucent midrange performance.

Hulgich says the Duke exceeds its own design goals and exhibits the clarity and speed of a live performance. And adept with all genres of music, the Duke’s driver integration reveals the precision and clarity you hear from the kind of big bands created by its namesake, the great Duke Ellington.

The Duke has a frequency response of 25-23 kHz, a sensitivity of 88 dB and an impedance of 4 ohms.

Both models will be launched exclusively at the 2018 Melbourne International Hi-Fi Show, October 12-14, Pullman Mercure Hotel at 65 Queens Road, Albert Park. Tickets are on sale now.
