Exclusive: New Direction for Cambridge Audio after 22 Years
Cambridge Audio, the celebrated and iconic name in hi-fi, has found a new Australian home after shifting distribution in Australia after 22 years.
Melbourne's Synergy Audio Visual, responsible for distributing famous brands including McIntosh, Sonus faber, Audio Research and many more, announced that “a change in business model for the UK-based audio brand will take effect on 1 October 2023”.
During its tenure, Synergy Audio Visual grew the brand in Australia to its position today, enjoying a strong reputation among retailers, the media, and consumers alike.
In a simultaneously released press announcement, Melbourne's BusiSoft AV announced they have been appointed as the “exclusive distributor of renowned British Hi-Fi brand, Cambridge Audio, for Australia and New Zealand, effective 1 October 2023”.
Charlie Henderson, Chief Commercial Officer at Cambridge Audio, told StereoNET:
With our growth plans, we are building a portfolio meeting the needs of both existing audio fans and new audiences driven by a shared love of music. The change in channel strategy is designed to underpin this, and we look forward to working with the BusiSoft AV network across Australia and New Zealand to further this goal.
Philip Sawyer, Managing Director of Synergy Audio Visual, said:
With the upcoming change in distribution of Cambridge, we are proud of our work with the brand over the last two decades. It has always been an important brand in our portfolio and given the role we have played in building and developing Cambridge locally, it is well positioned for the future. We wish them nothing but continued success.
Sawyer continued,
The growth and strong positioning of Cambridge in Australia also epitomises the work we do with all the brands in our premium portfolio. Our ability to grow and develop leading brands is backed by our investment and support of those brands and with our reseller partnerships. It is an exciting time as we pursue new opportunities, and we look forward to sharing an important announcement with the market in the coming months.
George Poutakidis, Founder and CEO of BusiSoft AV, told StereoNET:
We partner with the very best brands in audio from around the world and are dedicated to providing Hi-Fi products within the Australian and New Zealand markets, that provide sound like no other. With the mutual desire to deliver quality sound to passionate music lovers, Cambridge Audio is a great addition to the BusiSoft AV portfolio.
StereoNET is currently in Hong Kong for the Audiotechnique AV Show and has spoken with representatives of Cambridge Audio, Synergy Audio Visual, and Busisoft AV, and understands the parting of ways is amicable, and that Synergy Audio Visual will work with its retailers and Cambridge during the transition. Synergy is also prepared for the future, which includes an exciting new opportunity.
Busisoft AV recently ended its distribution of Naim and Focal in Australia and New Zealand. StereoNET understands many distributors are in discussions with the French company to represent the brands in Australia and New Zealand; however, no agreement has yet been reached.

applause awards
Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
